Morning Roundup: Boom! edition

Good morning, Houston. There's nothing quite like a building implosion to lift our spirits at the beginning of the week — if, of course, it's a building we won't miss. That happened to be the case with the Crowne Plaza hotel in the Medical Center, which was reduced to rubble Sunday; click the link for video from KHOU. (Be prepared to wait — there's a lot of buildup to the big moment in Channel 11's video. For a shorter, sweeter look, watch this time-lapse video from Houstonist flickr contributor j-a-x.). The former hotel was demolished to make way for the Texas Children's Hospital maternity center, a 15-story, 720,000-square-foot building scheduled to open in 2011. Interesting fact, by the way: The Medical Center has more square footage than the combined downtowns of El Paso, Fort Worth and San Antonio. Who knew?
>> Oh, so that's why it's called 'Bikes and Boobs': Ten-year-old Cody Martin bought a DVD of motorcycle stunts at a Houston motorcycle show recently — but when he watched it, he was surprised to find that the disc contained video of topless women. "We put the DVD in and here came the stuff that I ain't supposed to see, or no other kid is supposed to see," Martin told KTRK. There was a parental warning label on the video, and Martin's mother, Vickie, is wondering why it was sold to Cody in the first place. "I will be the one purchasing the DVD and watching it first" in the future, she said. The DVD's producer, which is based in California, apologized to the Martins and said the sale was an accident.
>> Missing skydiver found two days after jump: A skydiver who didn't return from a jump last week was found dead in a field in Rosharon on Friday. Scott Bell, 35, was apparently the victim of a parachute that failed to open and a backup that didn't work. He had made the jump at Skydive Spaceland on Wednesday; Bell was a maintenance worker who lived in a trailer on the property, so co-workers didn't think it unusual when they didn't see him return from the jump. "On the last jump of the day, a lot of guys just go home," Brazoria County Sheriff's Lt. Russ Baker told KPRC. Crews began looking for Bell on Friday after a pilot saw what looked like a canopy in the overgrown field about a mile from the Skydive Spaceland facility.
>> This week's weather: So you're thinking to yourself, "Hey, it's mid-November, so it's going to get cold soon, right?" Well, uh, no — at least not anytime in the next couple of weeks, according to current forecasts. This week, look for highs in the 80s through Wednesday, with a slight cool-down at the end of the week (we're talking about mid-70s vs. mid-80s, so don't get too worked up). Humidity should hang around, too, with a rain chance through the middle of the week. Today, expect a high of 80 with a 40 percent chance of showers in the afternoon; tonight, the rain chance will decrease a bit as temperatures drop into the mid-60s.

I love how you can see the Texas Children's hospital in the background in that photo. It makes it look like the hospital is knocking the hotel over. Very fitting!
I really wish I had known about this, would have made a delightful start to my Saturday!
