New CD Releases: November 13, 2007

111207aliciakeys.jpgIt’s like Divas Las Vegas 2007 this week, but in a good way! Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, and the Queen of Soul all have new albums debuting on the charts.

It took us a little longer than usual to warm up to Alicia Keys’ new single, “No One” from her latest album, As I Am. But now that we’ve heard it endlessly on the radio and on TV, and it’s formed its own repeat loop in our heads, and we find ourselves singing “No One, No One, No Ooooone!” unconsciously aloud in public, we really like it! A lot.

Duran Duran (sans original guitarist Andy Taylor) is back with a sleek new sound -- contributors Justin Timberlake and Timbaland probably helped -- on their fantastic pop album, Red Carpet Massacre.

Aretha Franklin’s new CD, Jewels in the Crown, is a real treat. It features duets from the last two decades of Franklin's illustrious career, including songs with Mary J. Blige, the late great Luther Vandross, and John Legend.

Brandon Flowers and his new BFF Lou Reed make music together on a track called “Tranquilize,” but it’s mostly previously unreleased album extras and movie soundtrack contributions (including a Joy Division cover for the film Control) on The Killers’ new b-sides album, Sawdust.

Yes, Celine Dion makes funny faces and beats her chest while singing, and that impersonation Ana Gasteyer used to do on SNL was hil-air, but it looks like Celine is going to have the last laugh here. She sounds better than ever on Taking Chances, and we're not just saying that because she was on Oprah yesterday and almost made us cry. Let the haters hate!

The Hives once called themselves “everyone and their mama’s new favorite band." Well, that was six years ago, and suffice it to say they are not everyone’s new favorite band today. But maybe their plans for global airwaves domination will be realized with the new Black and White Album. Okay, maybe not, but this solid record is bound to win over some new fans.

-They also made a song with Timbaland not too long ago

HOW CAN YOU NOT MENTION THE NEW SEAL ?
IT'S CALLED "SYSTEM" AND IT'S PRETTY GOOD.
I WILL ADMIT THAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME GETTING USED TO HEARING HIS WIFE SING (THEY PAIR UP ON TRACK #5 - "WEDDING DAY"
THIS NEW ONE IS CLOSER TO HIS FIRST ALBUM AS THE TRACKS ARE MORE DANCE THAN THE POP BALLADS OF HIS LAST THREE CDs.

Alicia's "No One" song really sounds like she's just yelling b/c she can't hit those high notes. It's catchy, but I find myself tensing up. Anyone else?
