If he isn't already, Joe Mathlete should be considered a local hero. It isn't enough that he has given us two of the funniest blogs on these here Internets (Joe Mathlete's Great American Blog and Joe Mathlete Explains Today's Marmaduke), but he's also the ringleader of one of the most enjoyable live acts in town. The Mathletes' "Pinocchiobot (or, The Devil and Robot McGee)" is a testament to Joe Mathlete’s brand of (successful) oddball humor.
While you don't have to take The Mathletes’ subject matter seriously (although robots and raisins are duly underrated these days), their musical prowess is a different thing altogether. Conceptually a one-man band, The Mathletes’ live shows actually feature a rotating cast of the instrumentally inclined, including local favorites The Dimes. It is actually a pretty grandiose and elaborate production, which is in really a stark contrast to Joe Mathlete’s minimalist attitude. Either way, their cover of Talking Head's "Psycho Killer" gets us every time.
The Mathletes perform a free show at Dean's Credit Clothing with !Alarma! and Giant Princess this Sunday night.
