Concert Preview: Tori Amos

071119_tori.jpgTori Amos’ tour is coming to Houston this coming Sunday night, at Jones Hall. Yes, we know that’s almost a week away, but we wanted to give you a good heads up since many of us are going out of town.

Tori is currently touring supporting her latest album, American Doll Posse. She received fame with her debut solo album Little Earthquakes (which spawned the very personal "Silent All These Years" and "Crucify,” among others), then followed that up with a string of top ten albums and alternative radio hits like “God,” “Spark,” “Caught a Light Sneeze,” “A Sorta Fairytale,” and more.

However, her success was preceded by some interesting career events:

• In the mid-80’s, she got her first entertainment break with a Kellogg’s commercial (could this be the inspiration behind “Cornflake Girl”?)

• In the latter half of that decade, she fronted a band called Y Kant Tori Read. Critics panned it and its album cover had everybody wondering if this was the same Tori we know.

Performing at a place like Jones Hall is where Tori Amos shines the most. The acoustics there should capture her intimate songs and piano playing better than your usual run-of-the-mill venue. If you’d like to see Tori live, drop us an e-mail: we have a pair of tickets to give away. Just send us your name and phone number to contest (at) houstonist (dot) com. The contest ends at noon tomorrow and the winner will be contacted shortly after. (Please note: we have these tickets in our hands, so you’ll have to pick them up from us.)
