Get Art Smart Part II: Buy Art!

So if you've been following our easy, no-fuss no-muss primer on learning about art and local artists, etc. now is your chance to show off your new knowledge! This weekend brings us Spacetaker's 2007 Holiday Sale, featuring all kinds of work from local artists. 112907_spacetaker2007wintersale.jpg They'll have everything from jewelry to paintings to sculpture for purchase AND 75% of the proceeds benefit the artist while 25% goes to Spacetaker, which helps nurture the Houston arts community! What could be better?

Two birds, one stone, cool art, in your house.

Or, if you're not totally selfish like we at Houstonist have a slight tendency of being, you can take this opportunity to do a little Christmas shopping for others. Art makes for a great gift - especially If you're anything like us and you have several relatives who are insanely hard to buy gifts for. Our weird goth cousin who hates everything, including gifts, comes to mind. But how will he turn up his obnoxious teenage nose at a super-cool, one-of-a-kind piece from a local up-and-coming artist? Hmmmmm? It will be mighty tough on his cloudy disposition, folks. We look forward to making his little black lips smile for the first time in ages. And then we will know we have won.

Back to the art sale. If you're in a festive mood, there will be a (no doubt) very fun opening reception on Friday night from 6-9 p.m. The reception will include beer and wine with food provided by Beaver’s, a new restaurant opening on Washington Avenue in winter 2007, from the lovely Monica Pope of T'afia fame.

If you can't make it to the opening reception, fear not! The sale will go on throughout the weekend, from 10-5 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday.

About Spacetaker...the concept is simple: Gather and present all possible cultural arts information in Houston to provide greater awareness and access to cultural arts organizations, artists and events. The mission of the Winter Holiday sale is to give local artists the opportunity to showcase their work to Houstonians who seek unique, original art for the holiday gift giving season.
