Rumors of foul play, even a mention of fellow rapper Spice 1 also being involved in a shooting, buzzed around town. The two incidents are not thought to be related.

Capt. Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office said Butler had apparently died in bed.

"At this time there's no signs of foul play," Winter said. "It appears to be possibly natural, but pending autopsy and toxicology we can't say the cause."

Jive Records has issued the following statement regarding Pimp C's death:

"It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). Jive Records' President and CEO Barry Weiss states: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."

XM’s uncut hip hop channel, “RAW” (XM 66), will remember the life and legacy of Chad “Pimp C” Butler with a special broadcast on Friday, December 7. XM RAW’s tribute to Pimp C will feature music from his influential hip hop group UGK, as well remembrances from Three 6 Mafia, Scarface, Rick Ross, DJ Drama, David Banner and many others.

Houston rapper Pimp C was found dead Tuesday morning in his hotel room on LA's Sunset Strip. Pimp C had performed with Too Short on Saturday evening at the House of Blues. Pitchfork reports "L.A. firefighters responded to a 911 call at the Sunset Strip's Mondrian Hotel, where they found the rapper dead in his bed. No information on cause of death has been given at this time."

Pimp C, born Chad Butler, was one half of the rap duo UGK. Formed in the late 1980's with friend and collaborator Bun B, The Underground Kingz built a strong following in Houston and throughout the South's rap community. UGK garnered increased national attention after appearing on Jay-Z's hit single "Big Pimpin'."

The group had just returned from a hiatus and was enjoying success associated with their latest release - a self-titled two disc set. The CD marked the return of the duo following Pimp C's jail stint for assault charges. The duo recently picked up a pair of accolades at BET's Hip Hop Awards for Best Collaboration (with OutKast) and Video of the Year for "International Player's Anthem."
