Veggie Bites: Rudyard's British Pub

We had ourselves a little quandary this past weekend. It was close to midnight and our friends wanted to grab a drink. Houstonist was hungry because, well, Houstonist is always hungry. Now, there's very little that excites us when we think of bar food. Being vegetarian, we have learned to expect that our late-night bar food will taste like deep-fried freezer burn. (We suspect that the meat options don't taste much better.) So we fortified ourselves for the impending Jalapeño Popper Atrocity or Cheese Fries Devastation when we went with our friends to Rudyard's British Pub.

We were surprised to discover that this busy, low-key neighborhood bar not only had a very wide selection of beer (everything from Schlitz to some of the harder-to-find microbrews and imports), they also had a fairly substantial menu with a number of vegetarian options. We ordered an eggplant parmesan sandwich for $6.50 and decided it would be safe not to get our hopes up.

Guess what, Houstonist! There's hope for some decent bar food! While it wasn't the best sandwich we've ever had, the eggplant parmesan sandwich leaped well over the bar (sorry, we can't help ourselves) for late night pub grub. Our eggplant parmesan came steaming hot and smothered in marinara and mozzarella, and was barely contained in its toasted pain au lait bun (which, by the way, came from Kraftsmen Baking). We happily devoured our sandwich with a pint of Blue Moon, and spent the rest of our night drinking beer and playing darts with our friends, content in the knowledge that we need never suffer a Jalapeño Popper Atrocity at Rudyard's British Pub.

The black bean nachos are pretty yummy (Groovehouse recommends). GREAT review!

Anything on Kraftsman bread is worth writing about!

A sandwich like that AND that close to midnight is my best friend. As long as that best friend also just picked up a six-pack of Belhaven... See you soon, Rudz!

Love Rudyards - they have great live music too!

One of the best burgers in town. Really, everything's good there.

Agreeing with mward, one of the best burgers! I live in LA and when I go to Houston, I usually get off the plane, head into Rudz for a burger and a pint. Both the standard and veggie burger (with a basket of tots) are wonderful.

I've heard amazing things about their veggie burgers as well, but I have yet to try them out.
