Morning Roundup: Houstonist's birthday (observed) edition

Good morning, Houston. Hey, guess who's having a birthday today? Well, OK, it's technically not Houstonist — our second birthday was back on Nov. 20, but we figured that if the queen can have two birthdays, so can we. And so we're throwing ourselves a little birthday party tonight, and you're all invited. It starts at 6 p.m. at Monsoon Wok, Lamar at San Jacinto (yes, street parking is free downtown after 6). Six words: Food. Drinks. Cake. See you there.

>> The future of Houston's Wi-Fi plan? Uhhh ... : The Chronicle reports that the future of the city's plan for a municipal Wi-Fi plan is still up in the air pending some decisions by EarthLink, the company that was supposed to build the network. Last month, the company said it was considering "strategic alternatives" for its municipal wireless division, but it's not clear what those alternatives might be. In the meantime, though, Houston is reaping benefits from EarthLink's uncertainty: A $5 million penalty the company paid the city in September because it failed to begin work on the network as planned will be used to fund a "digital inclusion" project to help connect students and low-income elderly residents to the Internet.

>> More downtown land for Tilman?: We're sure you've noticed the tasteful Downtown Aquarium — you know, the mini-amusement park/mammoth restaurant wedged between the Theater District and I-45. Well, the Aquarium could soon grow, according to KTRK's Miya Shay: Landry's Restaurants, which owns the complex, is making a second attempt at leasing the former Fire Alarm Building property adjacent to the Aquarium site. The proposed lease, which would run through 2041, would increase Landry's rent to $250,000 a year from $150,000 and would require any future development to — gulp! — complement the existing Aquarium. Landry's tried to get the land in 2003, but couldn't reach an agreement with the city; the city then tried to sell the land, but wasn't able to make a deal it liked. City Council was set to consider the lease proposal yesterday, but postponed a decision until next week.

>> Missing: One spur, slightly used: A box of historical items, including a brass spur used by Mexican Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna, was reported missing last week from the Dallas Historical Society's offices — and no one's found it yet. DHS officials have put the word out that the items are gone and police say they're treating the incident as a theft, but it's not clear exactly what a thief would hope to do with the booty: "I can't imagine that any of that stuff would be easy to sell," New Jersey antiques dealer David Rago told the AP. "An old brass dress spur by itself isn't worth a lot of money, unless you know it came from Santa Anna. It's the story that makes it valuable."

>> Today's weather: The skies, they are a-changin' — beginning later today. We'll have a mostly sunny afternoon with a high around 70, followed by patchy fog moving in tonight as temperatures fall into the lower 60s. Tomorrow morning, the fog should lift to reveal a warm, cloudy day. Ugh.

Hey, guess who's having a birthday today? Oh, wait, we've already covered that. Well, then, how about some headlines? Here goes ...
