Reader Emily B. snapped this picture of a very soapy Mecom Fountain on her way to work this morning — kinda Christmasy, don't you think? (Sorry, but we're Houstonians, which means we have some bizarre, deep-seated belief that soap bubbles really do look like snow. Don't correct us.)
Thanks, Emily! And to our other 10 readers: If you see anything around town you think we should know about, drop us a picture. In the meantime, we're going to head down to the Museum District to do some laundry ...

I bet this would have looked neat last night under the Zaza's lonely spotlight (since the fountain lights were stolen way back when).
Yeah — the good news is that the city finally approved the money for the new lights, which means we'll have them ... uh ... sometime.
I never saw people put soap in a fountain until I move to Houston. I guess it's a Texas thing. :)
I just hope its not going to kill all of the grass around there or anything.
I'm a fan of the soap in the fountain... especially when it's windy. Then big globs of suds go floating through the intersection. w00t
Hmm.. it kept giving me an error, then when I reloaded the page it had posted my message 3 times. Is there any way to delete the duplicates?
It's seemed to me over the last couple of weeks that some of the lights are already back. I drive by the fountain every night and it's much more illuminated than it has been.
Jax - same thing happened to me... weird.
Looks like it's ready for a foam party! Anyone?
I just hope that there is any permanent damage to the fountain from this; that amount of suddage would require a LOT of soap. Soap can screw up the fountain's plumbing.
It'd be a shame to get the lights back and the fountain would be broken . . . again.
!!!
I think Seventh Generation detergent is acceptable...
The Wortham fountain looks good in suds, too!
It's usually Rice students who are the culprits.
While it may look cool to see the bubbles floating everywhere, the truth is that all that soap can damage the pump in the fountain. The city has to drain the fountain every time this happens & clean out the pump, which costs money. I love this fountain & I'd hate to see it permanently damaged just because some kids want to play a stupid joke.
Everyone: Sorry for the problems with the comments — these are residual issues from when we switched over to the new commenting system a while back, and they're being taken care of. For now, even if you get an error message, there's a 95 percent chance your comment went through, so just give it a few minutes and see.
Stina: The ZaZa has floodlights pointed at the Mecom, which is why it looks like it's lit up. But the light's not coming from within the fountain like it should be.

The Chron did a small write up on this.
