After speculating about unearthing former head coach Jack Pardee, the University of Houston Cougars decided today to go with Oklahoma University assistant coach Kevin Sumlin as their replacement for the departed Art Briles.
At OU, Sumlin rose to the rank of "co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator, and wide receivers coach", which has to be the damn longest job title in the world, short of Elizabeth II. He's been a journeyman, having coached at five other universities before OU.
He'll bring a focus on offense and passing in particular that is well-suited to UH's aerial assault roster. It's unknown whether or not Sumlin will coach the Coogs in the Texas Bowl against TCU on the 28th. The official announcement of the hiring will come at a press conference tomorrow, and we fully expect to hear then what UH athletic director Dave Maggard intends. It looks like the Coogs will take the loss of Briles in stride with this pickup; now we just have to find out how long the Cougar faithful will have to wait to meet the new guy.
