Morning Roundup: Fish story edition

Good morning, Houston. Who said Barbie never did anything for anybody? She's helped make 4-year-old Phoebe Swann famous, at least for a little while: Swann recently caught a 50-pound Black Drum with a Barbie fishing rod. It happened during a family trip to Rockport; Swann was using the Barbie rod with a red plastic worm as bait when she reeled in the big fish. In case you're wondering, Swann and her dad threw the fish back — and there's no word on whether she's willing to sell the lucky pole.

>> HISD bond opponents file motion: Opponents of HISD's $805 million bond issue, which voters approved in November, have filed a motion seeking to overturn a decision to validate the election, citing concerns that the bond plan does too little for black and other minority students. The motion focuses on Travis County state District Judge John K. Dietz's December validation decision, saying that Dietz didn't have jurisdiction in a suit the school district filed in Austin to handle any legal challenges that might arise. "The district plans to aggressively address these allegations, and we believe the judgment entered in Travis County is solid," district attorney Pat Mizell told the Chronicle. But bond critic State Rep. Sylvester Turner has a different take: "Eventually, I think you will see this gravitate into a class-action lawsuit," he said.

>> Rosenthal update: He's out! He's in! Maybe!: One day after he said he would withdraw from the race for Harris County district attorney, current DA Chuck Rosenthal announced Thursday that he's thinking about staying in after all. Rosenthal, dogged by a series of romantic e-mails he sent his executive secretary using county computers, was under pressure from county GOP leaders not to seek re-election; he said yesterday that he hasn't talked to party brass, but might enter the race before this evening's deadline. In other DA-related news, Assistant DA Kelly Siegler announced her candidacy Thursday, saying she's running because the office has a great reputation. "Those of us who have made it our career want to make sure it retains that reputation," she said. Siegler, who has worked in the DA's office for 21 years, said she phoned Rosenthal yesterday morning to tell him she was going to run, but they didn't talk much: "He was polite, but he didn't say a lot," she said.

>> This weekend's weather: Looks like we're in for a warm-up this weekend, with temperatures getting into the mid-70s by Sunday afternoon. For today, expect a partly sunny afternoon with a high of 62; tonight, temperatures will drop into the mid-50s with patchy fog. Saturday and Sunday, look for clouds and highs around 73.

Now, how's about some headlines?

I'm assuming there's not an actual hook on the end of a Barbie fishing rod. So, DAMN, that's gotta be one stupid fish.
