Houstonist Bites: Bubba's Texas Burger Shack
Okay, okay, we know, you don't need to remind us (we are sensitive about our largesse), we're in shape - round, round is technically a shape. We cannot help ourselves at all, will power schmill power, who needs it? There is one perfect food, a luscious bundling of all of the food groups. The burger, the tasty, juicy cheesy with bacon and all of the veggies and a schmear of mustard and a double-schmear of mayonnaise burger with some kind of side. Note: we did not say "onion rings or french fries" because the place we are reviewing gots no fried sides. Never fear, Bubba's Texas Burger Shack may not have the room for a fryer (and one of those countertop units like you can buy at the whatevahmart would never keep up) but do not let that deter you. Located under the new Westpark Tollway, whose construction they survived by the skin of their teeth, in a smallish and very eclectic shack is the home of the best buffalo burger we have ever wrapped our lips around. We have wrapped our lips around a lot of, well, burgers.
We feel good about ourselves, going to Bubba's - we feel like we just did ourselves a big ole healthy good and good for you favor. After all, that buffalo burger we just pounded down had less cholesterol than turkey and is about 80% of the fat and calories of it's beef step-sibling. We usually feel so good about our healthy burger idea, that the final product has both bacon AND cheese. Our favorite side (besides some jalapeno chips) is the jalapeno potato salad! Nicely hot, not "setcha lips on fire" hot the potato salad is very delicious. Makes up for the absence of fried side items. Also of note is the Bubba Melt, er patty melt - it sports a grilled jalapeno and onion mix that really adds a nice touch to the sandwich. On a sad, or side note, depending on your view - the sole vegetarian item on the menu - a grilled cheese. Based on the bumper stickers on the wall, if you are a vegetarian - you need a good sense of humor, or to keep that little tidbit of information to yourself - just saying.
Lastly, for a shack, this fabulous little burger joint was featured on The Food Network, along with our favorite burger authority, The Texas Burger Guy. So, we aren't the only ones who love to sit on the covered deck outside on a nice afternoon with a cold bucket of adult malt beverages and a hot buffalo burger. They also serve iced tea, cokes and Jones cokes. This is Texas, they are all cokes - sometimes sodawaters, but almost always cokes.
Bottom Line: Good and good for you a complete meal with a beer will set you back around $10. The ambience is Texas ice house, the owners and employees are crazy nice and the food is worth writing home about. If you are looking for some burger love that won't send you into a coronary with all of it's fat and cholesterol - this is the place!!! All the greasy taste without the greasy side effects! We love us some Bubba's!! You will too.

Our stomachs are soul mates. Seriously, I love going for the "healthier" option and then totally negating it with bacon and cheese. I JUST drove by this two weeks ago when (ahem) got lost and promised to check it out. Now I have even more motivation to go!
