Houstonist is at it again, we are rebelling hard against our very own New Year's Resolution to be healthier and perhaps a touch on the thinner side. We are going to turn into a cartoon tire spokesperson, but, hey, the sooner we hammer out a top ten list of burgers, the sooner we can, oh hell - move on to the fried chicken and chicken fried steaks. Who are we really kidding? We just have tiny, miniscule fits and starts of nutritional goodness, which are merely pawns in our chicken-fried game of food rationalization (admission is the first step, ya'll!). We found the break in the weather Saturday so invigorating that we hauled ourselves off to Lankford's for one of our beloved bacon cheeseburgers. As you can see by the photo, they make a dainty, almost delicate burger! We had to compact it with our little grubhooks before taking that first mind boggling bite. Oh yes, burger love has been elevated to a whole new level - burger lust. We have been paying the fine folks at Langford a visit for several years - so our burger lust is in full force and effect. In fact, we howled with outrage when the local news highlighted them - I mean really, now it's just more crowded! We do lust for the Lankford's - it's an itch that has to be immediately scratched, or we will just eat burgers all over town (you don't see right through our flimsy logic, do you?) in a brave attempt to quell the burger beast within.
We digress. We apologize. This burger is well seasoned and huge, not just a big fat burger patty, but generous veggies. It requires a good squishing into submission prior to consumption. Do not tattle on us, but, we find that it really needs to be cut in half. We've been told by waitstaff (years ago!), "It's a burger, pick it UP!". The bacon, oh the bacon, pardon us for moment, just one little moment...Okay, we're breathing normally again. The bacon on the burger was a half-pound of luscious slices if it was an ounce. We are totally serious. We have only seen bacon like this at Annie's and Christian's, for real. The patty is cooked to a pinkish-gray, so, it's past the point of freaking out those of you who don't like medium rare like we do, and still juicy, juicy, juicy. The vegetables are crisp and fresh and bountiful (we like to think that if there's lots of lettuce, well, it's good for us, kinda). We were so enthralled by the magnitude of bacon, we hardly noticed the toasted bun. That, or our eyes were rolled back in our head - which is a very distinct possibility.
The onion rings are delicious, but we recognize them as coming from the freezer (hey, in the right grease, for the right amount of time - who's to complain too loudly). The real highlight of the sides, is the Tex Mex, a homemade fried blend of jalapeno and onion strips. Holy fried sides, Houstonians - these alone are worth the trip! The jalapeno strips are nice - not too hot, but loaded with flavor and the little onion strips, well, just like homemade rings, but, sticks. Don't waste your time on the rings, hit up the Tex Mex (just our little ole humble opinion). But, enough about the burger. It's the best in town, by a scant nose, but, THE best. It's messy, very messy, in fact. If you want a dainty, wee bite of precious not so messy burger - do not come crying to us! You got no burger game. Just saying.
Enough of all that - there's more on the menu to talk about. For one, the specials are worth writing home about. Made daily from scratch, they have some absolutely fantabulous daily specials. Monday and Tuesday, you get "Chef's Choice", if you are lucky, it'll be chicken and dumplings or beef tips. The enchilada's on Wednesday are divine and the chicken fried steak on Thursday is a scratch made, thick and fork tender offering with some killer gravy. No, we aren't telling you the wrong days to make more room for ourselves, that's not really how we roll. The desserts are handmade daily and are also fantastic - we rarely have the tummy space for dessert, once we devour that monstrous meal.
Bottom Line: Best Bacon Cheeseburger and Best Side with the Tex Mex. Not "cheap", but, a better bang for your buck than some of the "gucci burgers", unless you just want to see and be seen. The place is an eclectic shack of a burger joint, having been converted in the '70's from the original grocery store to a burger joint by the family. Here's what the Texas Burger Guy had to allow. Houston, try it - just don't expect dainty and non-greasy - only attempt this burger if you like 'em big and greasy!

WHO KNEW?
ALL THE TIMES I BIKED BY THERE 1982 -1993 AND NEVER KNEW IT WAS EVEN OPEN! (IT NEVER LOOKED OPEN BACK THEN!)
I GUESS BACK THEN ALL THOSE SHOTGUN SHACKS THAT USED TO BE THERE HAVE SPROUTED INTO EXPENSIVE TOWNHOUSES.
BACK THEN THE FOURTH WARD WAS A PLACE THAT YOUR AVERAGE "OUTSIDE-THE-LOOP-ER" AVOIDED.
I KNOW WHERE MY FIRST MEAL IS GOING TO BE NEXT TIME
I VISIT (OR MOVE BACK TO) HOUSTON!
SHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! This has been a secret spot for decades! Don't ruin it for the rest of us! :-)
Love Lankfords. It's kind of a dive but it's *our* dive.
Love your best burger quest. I have got to get over there.
