Daily-Ist Thursday: A Knockout Reading

::Inprint Brown Reading Series Featuring Dave Eggers and Chimamanda Adichie::
Houstonist just finished reading the new books by both these authors and was *blown away.* HALF OF A YELLOW SUN, Chimamanda Adichie's novel about the Biafran War in Nigeria in the late sixties, follows the political and military developments through the eyes of several civilians, painting a human and devastating portrait of war.
Similarly, Dave Eggers' fictionalized autobiography of the very real Valentino Achak Deng, WHAT IS THE WHAT, tells of Deng's life from age six, when his village was attacked in Sudan, to his life as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan in several refugee camps and eventually his emigration to the United States. The story is blistering, and true.
Dave Eggers has built a literary empire on the success first of Might Magazine, then his memoir A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS, then McSweeneys, The Believer, Wolphin, 826 Writing and Tutoring Centers, and several books. He has had a tremendous impact on the literary world for both adults and young people.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been showered with awards and accolades for both her books, and is a poised speaker to boot. Her first novel, PURPLE HIBISCUS, was shortlisted for the Orange Fiction Prize (2004) and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book (2005). She was a Hodder fellow at Princeton University and is now pursuing graduate work in the African Studies program at Yale University.
We highly recommend this reading and recommend even more that you read these books. Too many people know too little about post-colonial Africa. The genocide in Darfur, the Kenyan elections and ethnic cleansing: do you know what's happening? Read and learn.
