Whether you use your Q-Card, or buy a one-way paper ticket on the platform, the $1 trip 'fare item' purchased is good for up to 2 hours in the same direction of travel. Thus, if you buy your ticket at the Preston Station at 6:30 (to get to Leon's at the McGowen stop), as long as you are back on the train at McGowen (heading in the Fannin South direction) before 8:30, you can 'reuse' your one-way ticket (or not re-'tap' your Q-Card). If you head back towards downtown (i.e. the UofH-Downtown direction), you'll need to purchase a new ticket (or re-'tap' your Q-card) to have a valid fare item. The long/short of all this is that, depending on when the stops are along the pub crawl, you'll likely pay a total of $2-5 to ride the rail. Pretty cheap as there is zero-risk of a DWI.

Note that a "Day Pass" can be purchased from the railstop ticket vending machines for a paltry $2. I'm not sure if it expires at midnight or 24 hours after you buy it, though.
