:: Exiles in Paris Concert by Da Camera ::
At the turn of the twentieth century, musicians, choreographers, writers and painters from all over the world converged in Paris and began sharing their work and ideas with each other with the goal of revolutionizing their artistic disciplines. (We at Houstonist are expecting the same thing to happen here at any moment.)
Da Camera made a series of two concerts highlights the work of these creative people, most especially the musical ones. On Friday, March 14th, Da Camera has brought together the Houston Chamber Choir, Sō Percussion (Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, Jason Treuting, Lawson White); and several talented pianists and percussionists (Alan Feinberg, Timothy Hester, Pedja Muzijevic, Sarah Rothenberg, piano; Richard Brown, percussion; Matthew Strauss, percussion) under renowne Dutch conductor Reinbert de Leeuw to play Stravinsky and Antheil.
There are two reasons for all that percussion:
#1. Weddings. Yes, they can be stressful and we don't just mean choosing the florist. The day the vows take place is a pretty wacky time, most especially for the marrieds-to-be. Igor Stravinsky knew this well apparently, well enough to write a fantastic piece of performance music that embodies all the excitement and underlying terror wrapped around the event. He called it Les Noces. You see what we mean about needing percussion?
#2. Modern Life as Music. Stravinsky's new sounds, radical at their time, influenced American-born composer George Antheil. His most famous work, Ballet Mécanique, incorporated the sounds of "modernity" -- sirens, airplane propellers, electric bells and other urban life sounds -- with music, or perhaps better said *as* music.
Also on the program that night are Stravinsky's Four Russian Peasant Songs and Concerto for Two Pianos. This is going to be a phenomenal concert.
