>> Wintry mix blasts Panhandle, North Texas with sleet, snow: They came from the north and helped freeze your tootsies. Yep, those darn north winds are to blame for the uber chill around town today writes Meteorologist Tim Heller on the Houston Weather Blog. The same system that blanketed North Texas with nine inches of snow and caused Dallas-Ft. Worth airport to cancel 200 flights will share its chill with Houston. "This type of storm system is very typical of the end of winter and early spring, and the same storm may cause different impacts on different places," said Ron McQueen, an NWS meteorologist. Houstonist says bring on the spring. Of course we'll likely be regretting that statement as August rolls around.
>> Tax Break for the Rich II: Politics and news about politicians will be hanging in the air much like the arctic blast awaiting you outside your front door. Speaking of front doors, Mayor Bill White's is worth less than it used to be for no good reason according a to a report in the Houston Press. The HCAD appraisal reflects a seven figure drop (that's millions, folks) in the value of Mayor's crib. The stink of it is that HCAD states that the drop was due to the house now sitting in the flood plain according to the new map. Huh. The house was already in a flood plain on the old map. Perhaps the new map shows the Memorial home in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward.
>> Beer Can House Now Accepting Visitors: Speaking of Mayor White and houses, The Beer Can House officially opened to the public at 10 AM yesterday as previously reported by Houstonist. The former residence is a work of art and Houston icon located just north of Memorial at 222 Malone. Retired railroad worker, John Milkovisch started covering the once run-of-the-mill bungalow in roughly 50,000 beer cans as a way to avoid painting the house. The Orange Show maintains the creative casa and is well on its way to completing a full restoration of the property.
>> Today's weather: Moisture in the air and the winds will combine for a wind chill of 30 degrees today though the mercury will read 50. The conditions may bring flurries, but we doubt it. Yet another perfect day to stay home and read the Houstonist archives.
