Dumpling Delays Occuring Downtown

04012008_brokensoldier.jpgHoustonist loves "the dumpling nazi" and all of the tasty dumplings offered. Doozo is our lunch of choice a couple of times per week, we are completely, hopelessly in love with the dumplings and the hot and sour soup. If you go looking, Doozo moved a couple of months ago to the corridor behind their first location - and the prices went up just a wee bit. You can find them by seeking out the "tell tale line" that forms daily and runs out into the main walkway of the Park Shops. On our last visit, we just nearly fell over - the line was not moving as efficaciously as it normally does!!! Houstonist has that debit card commercial, the one by the same company that just completed and IPO, song rolling around in our heads - because it's so wrong!!! Now that Doozo accepts credit cards, plastic toting patrons hold up the line a wee bit (c'mon, move to the side so those who are paid up can go). Gone are the days of "get your cash out, state your order, pay and scram", which moved the line along at lightning speed. Whereas the Soup Nazi of television fame would never tolerate such, Houston's "dumpling nazi" is actually a very nice lady, running a delicious dumpling outfit.

We just love the "extra spicy combo, hot sour soup" that we regularly purchase, and although we grouse just a little about the acceptance of credit cards and the delays that result - we'll never shun Doozo, however, we are completely disenchanted by this move to accept credit cards. Cash is king in our world, however, the extra couple of minutes are worth it, when you can wrap your soup coolers around possibly the best steamed vegetable dumpling ever. It's mostly spinach and also contains rice noodles and a fine dice of tofu - at least that's the best estimation we can derive from the scads of them we have consumed. The actual contents, well, that's probably a secret - don't worry, we won't try this at home (well, we might, but, we won't admit to it - some things are best left to the experts).

I dunno about longer, slower lines... I'm of the school that skips breakfast and then gets lunch promptly at 11, so I haven't noticed any downside to the Doozo move.

I'm also one of the few Doozo patrons who occasionally orders from their two-item non-dumpling menu and gets "Noodles and Soy Bean Paste," because, you know, it's hard to find good paste nowadays. And Doozo makes really good paste.

Hey, why NOT try this at home? I've been making my own steamed dumplings for a while. It's pretty simple if you buy the wrappers pre-made. I suggest shanghai-style wrappers, found in the freezers at either HK Mkt or Golden Foods ~$3/75. Just season a little ground pork with garlic, 5-spice, shitake, rice vinegar, and chili oil. Drop a dollop on the wrapper, fold, and steam for 15min. You can get creative and add whatever else boils your water: Green onion, cilantro, water chestnut, tofu, or what I call the Forrest Gump- peas & carrots.

I'll do that, but, her veggie dumplings are "induplicable". Dumplings, or potstickers or whatever you want to call them. I'm partial to "tasty steamed/pan fried packets of love and nirvana" myself. The perfect food, cold dumplings make a lovely breakfast too......
