The Houston Astros 2008 season got off to a rough start Monday night as reigning NL Cy Young winner Jake Peavy bested the Astros 4-0 on the mound and at the plate.
Peavy held the Houston team in check as he threw seven solid innings while allowing only three hits. Peavy got the Padres on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Peavy would strike again in the fourth inning when he lined a single into left field for the 2-0 Padres lead.
The Padres would score a one run in the fifth and the seventh inning as their bullpen finished off what Peavy started as they shutout the Astros to open the season. For the night, Roy Oswalt wasn't at his best. The Astros ace had his worse opening day start by allowing 11 hits, three runs and throwing 114 pitches in 5.1 innings.
Houstonian Michael Bourn had an impressive debut. Bourn flashed his speed on the base paths with two stolen bases and made a spectacular sprinting catch that ended at the right-center field wall. Also, Miguel Tejada went 2-for-4 in his Astros debut with a double.
These two team go at it again tonight in San Diego as Texas pitchers Brandon Backe (Galveston) and Chris Young (Dallas) make their '08 season debuts.
