The Latin Recording Academy announced that Houston will host the Latin Grammys in November. Flexing Spanish like his name is Alex Trebek, The Chronicle reports that Mayor Bill White said, "Vamos a celebrar los premios Grammy en Houston,'' which means "We're going to celebrate the Grammy awards in Houston.'' The 11 year-old contest has previously been held in Miami, New York and Las Vegas. Houstonians should expect to see Latin music stars like Ricky Martin, Shakira and Calle 13 visit the Toyota Center. No word yet on if Houston's Grammy nominated Scott Gertner will host Scott Gertner's Latin Grammy party at one of Scott Gertner's bars.
>> Chuy Benitez on MSNBC: Thanks to B.S. Art Blog for pointing us to MSNBC's piece on Chuy Benitez. Benitez, an El Paso native, is currently an M.F.A. candidate at University of Houston in Photography and Digital Media. His work, Houston Cultura is currently being shown at Lawndale Art Center as part of FotoFest. Houston Cultura consists of digital panoramic photography composed of scenes from the Mexican-American community in Houston. "These are simply things worth sharing because I want there to be better understanding of where I come from and where Houston is going. Houston is officially a Hispanic city," Benitez says.
>> Death by blogging: The surge of Internet addiction around the world is well documented on the Internet (talk about a vicious cycle). Ready available content like on-line gaming, social networks, email and blogs are the culprits. We hear a lot about the consumers, but what about the producers. Off the Kuff steered us toward a Seattle Times posting of a New York Times article that says many bloggers aren't doing so well either. While there is nothing definitive like a keyboard through the brain, two bloggers have died from heart attack in four months with a third blogger dodging the bullet. As Charles Kuffner writes, "The day may come when circumstances will prevent me from doing this blog as I've been doing it; when and if that happens, I'll figure something out. I cannot conceive of any circumstances under which I'd risk my health for this site." We won't either. Just have to write one more post.
>> Santeria priest appealing Euless animal slaughter ban: Speaking of death, a ban on animal slaughter has turned into a battle over religious freedoms for a Euless man. Jose Merced practices Santeria, in which goats are sacrificed, processed and eaten. Euless officials say that he can't kill animals within the city limits so the are heading to court. Odds makers may give an edge to Merced due to a 1993 Supreme Court ruling in a similar case filed in Florida as The Chronicle reports. Perhaps Merced could teach his goats to blog about their plight in hopes that the deadline-induced pressure would lead to their demise.
>> Today's weather: Spring is springing and so is the weather. It'll be breezy and moderate tomorrow. Expect a high of 83 and a low of 72 tomorrow. Lots of puffy white things will be floating across the sky today, but the chance of rain is slim.
