Get Punched, Sucker

Fishing_w_Dad.jpgNot been to Montrose's Sucker Punch yet? Whatcha waiting for, fool? Well, if it's a kick arse art show from a muy talented artist, then it's your lucky weekend, peeps.

Sucker Punch + CreativeLeak present designs from artist, Tim Newton, on Saturday, April 12th, from 5-9pm. Refreshments will be served, with DJ spinning.

"When I show my work or show my site to people, most of the time I hear, 'your stuff reminds me of Dali, or you paint just like Salvador Dali,'" says Newton.

Surrealism, an art movement started in the early 1900’s, started when painters began painting from the subconscious. Artists like Salvador Dali painted in a way that expressed what they saw in dreams, and they used images that represented paranoia, sexuality, personal inadequacies, death, and a variety of feelings that occurred in the subconscious.

As the movement came and went, people started throwing around the term “surreal” as something that wasn’t normal or something that we are just plain not used to seeing. Really, surreal objects or images are images from the subconscious that take us out of the boundaries of reality: the social rules, politics, and “normal life.”

"According to that definition, I am not a surrealist at all," states Newton. "I guess a term that fits my style of painting better would be an 'abstract representationalist.' My artwork might not be anything that people have seen, but what I am doing is using images as symbolism to tell stories and represent my experiences. The events that I paint are actually reality…just represented using abstract ideas. Dali sometimes would start painting and see what would naturally come out without really thinking about it first. In contrast, I think a lot about how to display a story using images, and I plan out the every part of the composition before I apply any paint."

Tim has also designed a limited edition shirt that will be on sale at the event. Come early, these are sure to go quick.
