Bend Studio's Intimate Evening concert series continues tonight at NiaMoves in The Heights with a performance by Jake Shimabukuro.
Shimabukoro is a virtuoso ukulele player who grinds his pint sized axe very well. In fact, he's been called the "Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele." Concert Promoter, Corinne Tames says that tonight's show may be the Houston debut for the Hawaiian artist. The performance sold out days ago after the Houston Hawaiian association publicized the concert to its members.
As the name "Intimate Evening" suggests, the setting provides an intimate performance experience. As in, you're about to see live music performed in a cozy, non-traditional concert performance space. The casual setting promises "no pretention, no frills, just serenity and love and mojo and the sweet smell of nag champa."
The Houston incarnation of Intimate Evenings doesn't feature the nag champa, at least not last night, but the environment is very relaxing. Patrons are seated on the floor with a few blankets and cushions. And, yes, there is a row of chairs for the less than flexible folks in the crowd.
So what does one wear and bring to a show like this? Comfortable clothes according to Tames. She is also clear that patrons should feel free to bring their own seating if they like. Cushions, yoga mats and the like are encouraged. Chairs are discouraged to avoid damage to the floor. Houstonist would also like to suggest that folks wash their feet and wear clean socks as shoes need to be removed as well.
