Spring is springing which means that Festival time in Houston is ramping up, people. This weekend saw the official launch of Discovery Green and the recurrence of the Westheimer Block Party; more on these in a second. Next weekend brings us the International Festival and others. Get out your calendar and start planning. You'll not want to miss a chance to be outside if the spectacular weather continues.
>> Discovery Green Park opens downtown: 12 acres of pleasure was made available to the public this weekend as Discovery Green officially opened its gates. Houstonist has had eyes on the development of the site since the park at 1400 McKinney was demolished. "What the hell?" we thought as the only green outside Minute Maid was eviscerated by backhoes and bulldozers. The nearly two years of development was worth the wait. Although some have billed it as "Houston's Central Park," 12 acres does not equal 843. But, in a city renowned for its concrete and strip malls, Discovery Green does provide a breath of fresh air in our CBD. We foresee taking a stroll through the Gateway Fountain in our future, particularly once the summer heat-down beat-down descends upon downtown.
>> Spring 2008 Westheimer Survives Yet Another Block Party: We told you it would rock, and rock it did. Free Press Houston put on a great show this Saturday as live music and what-have-you took over Westheimer two blocks away from Houstonist HQ. Local musicians kicked out the jams from noon to midnight as traffic stacked up in the area. Oops. Houstonist has shots from the madness festivities. Check 'em out.
>> Matsui's Astros debut delayed: Baseball, oh how we love ya. How we love ya, dear old baseball. Yeah, we love you until big name free agents are injured at the start of the season. AAAGGGHHH! And the injured is Kazuo Matsui, which means "heir apparent to future Hall of Famer, Craig Biggio" in Japanese. Kaz has been on the disabled list prior to the start of the season due to surgery. Mark Loretta has seen most of the action, which makes Houstonist wonder if Mr. McLane's $16.5 million investment is going to be worth it. Any remember Tony Bocelli?
>> Today's weather: It's forking cold outside folks. Mother Nature plans to warm us up to 72 this afternoon, but the low is 45. Right now it's 46. Yikes. The bright side is that the day promises to be clear as a bell.
>> In brief: Obama's remarks help Clinton ... MS 150 riders get the job done ... Is town home development killing The Heights' charm? ... Showing off on your motorcycle may cause an accident ... Houston's a cheap place to run a business
