Concert Preview: The Jonx, Golden Axe and Awake at The Backroom

Fun and pretty music is for Friday night. However, Saturday night is for outragously loud, all-out intense rock, which is why you should go catch The Jonx, Golden Axe and Awake play at The Backroom on Saturday, May 10.

2008_05_09_jonx.jpgFor almost six years, the Jonx has given Houston its fair share of their uniquely noise-garage-punk sound. For reasons unknown to us, they seemed to have taken a hiatus from live shows, with the single exception being their appearance at last year's Hootenanny as Nomeansno. Needless to say, it was great and we're expecting no less from their first proper show in months. Their remiring new material doesn't hurt either.

When it comes to Golden Axe, your mind should go to one of two places: either an amazing 16-bit Sega video game featuring scantily clad, over-muscled characters or an equally amazing fully clothed, averagely muscled local metal band. We know metal might not be the most universal of musical genres, but listening to the pure power and talent behind Golden Axe will probably open you to the possibility of purchasing what could very well be your first metal album.
