H-Town Rock

Music for the Week of May 22-25

Welcome to H-Town Rock, your place to figure out just what music venues you’ll be attending around Houston this weekend. And as usual, this will be your chance to run into Houstonist as we’re out and about, braving the heat and humidity that we all love and hate here in Space City.

If there’s anything you feel that we’ve left out, feel free to let us know. We actually enjoy being informed!

Thursday, May 22
Iron Maiden @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Psychostick @ Fitzgerald's

IronMaidenBand.jpgYes, that really does read “Iron Maiden.” Your eyes are not deceiving you. Just two days after The Police grace the stage of the Pavilion, the men of Iron Maiden will be on hand to re-enact an entirely different version of the ‘80s. Instead of smooth, arty, jazzy pop music, attendees will be subjected to all manner of leather, hairspray and metal for the evening. But if ICP-styled, pseudo-metal craziness is your musical preference (and it certainly is what one of our roommates and his friends enjoy), then feel free to hit up Fitz’s for Psychostick.

Friday, May 23
The Murder Junkies/Los De Verdad/Rats in the Attic/Riot Up Front @ Walter's on Washington
Bob Schneider @ The Meridian
Disco Expressions/Molly and the Ringwalds @ The Continental Club
Rodney Parker & 50 Peso Reward / Josh Fuller at Kay's Lounge (Free show)

bobschneider.jpgWith any luck, you should be able to start the evening at The Meridian to listen to the engaging folk-rock stylings of Bob Schneider (who always puts on a great set) and then head over to The Continental Club for Houston’s favorite ‘80s cover band, Molly and the Ringwalds. Laugh it up with Bob and then dance about with Molly — what could be better?

Saturday, May 24
Ume/The Lymbyc Systym/The Sour Notes @ The Mink (8PM)
Guy Forsyth (In-store) @ Cactus Music (3:30PM)
Guy Forsyth (CD release) @ McGonigel's Mucky Duck (7:30 & 10PM)
Creedence Clearwater Revisited @ Sam Houston Race Park

guyforsyth.jpgIf we were you, we’d find a way to follow Mr. Guy Forsyth around town all day long (in the most non-stalkerish way possible). You can see him free at Cactus (which means you’ll have the available money to purchase his new album Calico Girl) and then find your way (with a few friends in tow, hopefully) to the Mucky Duck to hear this honest-to-goodness Texas Troubadour perform his outstanding tunes. But if you’re so inclined, feel free to head out to SHRP to see CCR songs sung by someone else besides John Fogerty: the songs you've come to love over the last three decades will still be performed, even if not by the same vocalist.

Sunday, May 25
Type O Negative/Hatebreed/3 Inches of Blood/Destro @ Verizon Wireless Theater

The only reason to actually attend this show is to have your face rocked off by Jamey Jasta and the men of Hatebreed. If you’ve never been present at one of their insanely intense shows, you owe it to yourself to experience the music of one of the most aggressively awesome hardcore bands out there. Sure, it might be in the Verizon Wireless Theater (ugh!), but that won’t stop the night’s onslaught of brutal music.
