H-Town Rock

Houston-area music for the weekend of May 29th – June 1st, 2008

Well, it seems that another weekend is upon us and that means it’s time for another installment of H-Town Rock. This week’s overarching theme: music from bands who reached their apex two or three decades ago! That’s right – this is your chance to enjoy music performed live that you normally have to listen to on your favorite classic rock station! All sarcasm and youthful snarkiness aside, fans of country, folk, and rock from the last 30 years will find much to take pleasure in this weekend. So get out there, find some live music, and mix it up a bit in H-Town. If there’s anything we’ve missed (and there usually is), feel free to let us know!

Bob Schneider at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
The Marshall Tucker Band and Whiskey Meyers at The Meridian
Paris Green, Mother’s Anthem, and Fifty Dollar Dynasty at Warehouse Live

This should be an interesting night all around. One of our friends refers to Bob as “Sexy Jesus” and she’s right – he is sexy and he does rather look like the long-haired, hippie-ish, post-European Jesus. On the other hand, there’s the Marshall Tucker Band, complete with everything one would expect to hear from a Southern Rock group that stands comfortably between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Charlie Daniels Band. And then again, if you’re one of our crazy roommates with his insatiable appetite for live music, it’s hard to beat the good times bar rock of Paris Green.

Friday, May 30th, 2008:
Colour Revolt, Snowden, and The Riff Tiffs at Walter's on Washington
Old 97's and Hayes Carll at The Meridian
The Dresden Dolls and Smoosh at Warehouse Live
The Mother Truckers and Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
Jimmy LaFave at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
The McKenzies, AWAKE, and The Gold Sounds at The Mink

What a fun panoply we have this evening: indie rock at Walter’s, alt-country at The Meridian, dark gothic pop-punk at Warehouse, country-rock and a cover band at The Continental Club, folk music at the Duck, and punk rock at The Mink. Yet, no matter how cliché that lineup appears in terms of music matched to venue, there’s not a single one of those shows that wouldn’t be worth your time.

Saturday, May 31st, 2008:
Patrice Pike/Skyblue72/Liviya Compean at Warehouse Live
Steve Miller Band/Joe Cocker at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Big Head Todd & The Monsters at The Meridian
Kansas/Mark Farner at Sam Houston Race Park

This is the night: unless you’re present at Warehouse for the upbeat rock of Houston live staple Skyblue 72, the rest of Houston will be awash in all manner classic rock. So whether you’ve decided to fly like an eagle, do some boom-boom-boom-booming, or carry on with your wayward son, tonight is your chance to sing along at the top of your lungs and/or play a ferocious air guitar all night long.

Sunday, June 1st, 2008:
Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, and Halfway to Hazard at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion

Yup – after a weekend full of three decades of rock-n-roll, all that we’re really left with here in Houston are the ever-popular country warblings of the perpetually black-hatted Tim McGraw (not that there’s anything wrong with that). So, if you’re up to it, pull out your boots, hat, and overly large belt buckle to do some two-stepping in The Woodlands.
