A Summer's Sweet Corn Is Worth The Having

052808_tafiamarket.jpgThe first of the summer corn has arrived, along with a bounty of other summertime goodies!

If you've never been to the Midtown Farmers Market located at t'afia, Monica Pope's award-winning signature restaurant in -- that's right -- Midtown, then this is the weekend to go!

Every Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to noon, the parking lot and restaurant itself host a small but potent farmers market offering everything from fresh, local produce, honey and yard eggs to cheeses from the Houston Dairymaids and baked goods from Krafts'men Bakery.

Houstonist is happy to announce that in addition to the regular bounty of produce and local products, this Saturday's market will also feature the first harvest of sweet summer corn, field tomatoes, blackberries, blueberries, peaches and even the ancient but enigmatic maroon carrots! Also for sale will be organic grassfed beef, heirloom potatoes, leeks and many varieties of home-grown herbs (not the 420-friendly variety, folks; move along...).

And those are just the parking lot offerings. If you find the morning sun melting you as it heats the asphalt to near-magma temperatures, step inside t'afia to sample some of the indoor vendors. Among them will be Maison Burdisso (French baked goods), Trentino Gelato and Monica Pope's own Plum Pantry prepared foods, in addition to the aforementioned Dairymaids and Krafts'men.

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn't mention one of the most enjoyable aspects of the Midtown Farmers Market: the breakfast biscuits. Make sure you pick up a McMonica breakfast sandwich from the counter inside which -- along with a cup of joe from Katz Coffee -- will all but ensure you have a bright and happy start to your marketing morning.

Getting there early is always a good idea, both to beat the heat and to grab the best produce. Parking is difficult to come by, but you can always take the light rail; the Midtown Farmers Market is on the HCC/Ensemble Theatre stop.

Aight missy, what's an Amaranth (besides a hedge fund in dutch w/ the CFTC?)?

I find the tomatoes more enticing than the corn, just saying. AND, you should see the Friday Lunch menu for t'afia - lusciousness.
