Houstonist Was There: The Opening of the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark

Houstonist braved the scorching heat and throngs of people at the opening of the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark near downtown Houston on Sunday to bring you these photos.

The masses waited outside the facility until the ribbon was cut allowing the crowd to flow into the park. There were kids, teenagers, parents, curious onlookers, videographers and photographers all packed like sardines in this brand new, 30,000 square foot, concrete encrusted facility. The sun reflected off the concrete to create a scorching atmosphere for pros and amateurs to show off their talents on the first day of this new skatepark.

We hope you enjoy these photos and we'd love to hear your comments.

"Packed" indeed. Looks like a hell of a time! I love the skyline behind the park; gorgeousness.

The skyline makes for excellent photos. I love it too!

This is great to see the City of Houston step up and create this park for the youth and all ages to enjoy. A few other cities had these parks when I was growing up and it was a dream for us to visit cities like Portland that embraced the youth. Great job Houston !!! I can't wait to dust off the board and join in.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Jamail.
