He's fast. He's agile like a cat. And he's the National League Player of Month. Lance Berkman's torrid May garnered the Texan the award for only the second time in his career.
Berkman had a May to remember. He hit .471 (49-for-104) with nine home runs, 11 doubles, 22 RBI and 31 runs scored. The Big Puma had a 17-game hit streak during the month and also tied the Astros franchise record by tallying eight straight hits. During the week of May 5-11, Berkman hit an astonding .682 (15-for-22) with two home runs, four doubles and 10 runs scored.
On May 2, Berkman's average was .295. It got as high as .401 during the Lone Star Series against the Texas Rangers. The guy's been a beast. During one stretch in May, Berkman went 19-for-25, that's only the second time the past 50 years that's happened!
Berkman and the Astros travel to Pittsburgh to begin a three game series today. His .385 AVG, 17 HR's and 47 RBI all rank no lower than fifth in MLB.
