Music for the Weekend of June 5th-8th, 2008
Holy crap! This looks to be a grand weekend for excellent music from all SORTS of local Houston bands. If you’re anything like our perpetually out-and-about crazy roommate and his friends, you might not be sleeping all weekend as you travel from show to show, from bar to bar, from venue to venue. Suffice to say, if you’re into supporting actual H-Town-based rock music as we are, then you too should have plenty to do for four straight days.

Thursday, June 5th, 2008
Dax Riggs and Beetle at The Continental Club
Mechanical Boy, You(Genius), The Gold Sounds, Closet City, and CJ Boyd at Numbers
Unwed Sailor, Sybris, News on the March, and Hungry Villagers at Walter's on Washington
What is this you say? There’s actually good music available on a Thursday night in Space City? Be still our beating hearts! Whether you’re into the punk/rock of Mechanical Boy and The Gold Sounds (debuting the new “Recession Thursdays” series at Numbers put on by Free Press Houston) or the dense, rich instrumental ambience of Unwed Sailor, people should find their way to start their weekend off properly with some great music.

Friday, June 6th, 2008
The Scattered Pages, The Literary Greats, and Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
Los Skarnales/Brains for Dinner/The Failed Attempt/DJ M.I.A. at Fitzgerald's
Arthur Yoria at FOX Sports Grill
Shake Russell at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Flowers to Hide, Slivered, and The Watermarks at Rudyard’s
French Kicks, Frightened Rabbit, and Young Mammals at Walter's on Washington
Folk and rock abound on this glorious Friday evening. So, whether you’re at the Galleria for Arthur Yoria (moving up in the world, isn’t he?), enjoying a typically fun evening at The Continental Club, partying with Flowers To Hide as they release their new EP (Down The Stairs), or getting down and dirty with Young Mammals at Walter’s, there’s no reason to be a homebody tonight.

Saturday, June 7th, 2008
Poi Dog Pondering and The Dedringers at The Continental Club
The Fight Scene, A Love Lost In Flames, and Bonnie Blue at Fitzdown
Ladytron and Datarock at The Meridian
Generation Landslide at Notsuoh
Guilty Hearts with Born Liars and Welfare Mothers at Rudyard’s
Deep Ella, Another Day, Mechanical Boy, Stepsonday, and Sleeping (with) Giants at Warehouse Live
And if Friday night wasn’t enough for you, then Saturday should truly slake your thirst for some excellent live bands. Ladytron and Datarock beam into town to help us pretend that we’re in the land of The Jetsons and not in the actual 21st century, presenting two different takes on synthpop. But, if big guitar rock with singable hooks are more your speed, then join our crazy roommate at The Meridian for Deep Ella and some of their friends.
Sunday, June 8th, 2008
Carrie Ann and the Apocalyptics at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
The Carrots, The Wiggins, and Stove Blow at The Mink (Backroom)
Another Run, A Dream Asleep, Espantapajaros, and Mothertone at Warehouse Live
Ahhh… Sunday – the end to another solid weekend of music in Space City. We’ve certainly had our share of outstanding weekends in the recent past and this one is no exception. Get out there, join us Houstonist folks, and enjoy what our fair city has to offer!
