The Orange Show for Visionary Art is going to play host to another cross-cultural musical act this Saturday. This mix of very danceable Benga meets American funk or Kenyan-American Indie Rock should be a great time. Extra Golden formed in Nairobi when Ian Eagleson, guitarist, arrived to study benga, or Kenyan pop while earning a master's degree in ethnomusicology. Along with fellow guitarist Alex Minoff joined forces with members of Orchestra Extra Solar Africa and Extra Golden was born. Their debut release received critical acclaim and the band was dealt a devastating blow with the death of lead singer Otieno Jagwasi of AIDS complications. Opiyo Bilongo, benga vocalist, stepped in to help fill the role and Extra Golden pressed on.
In 2006, they were invited to perform at the Chicago World Music Festival, but visa delays threatened to keep them away. Then Senator, and half-Kenyan, Barack Obama stepped up to assist in the process, thus paving the way for their American debut. In thanks, Bilongo penned a song entitled "Obama", he is also credited with writing "I Miss You" and "Love Hijackers" . New release, Hera Ma Nono has been receiving very positive attention from Fader, Paste, Pitchfork, Blender and more. In case you were interested (or have a penchant for just "knowing stuff", like we do) the album title is Luo for "love in vain". Also singing is Onyango Wuod Omari on "Night Runners" and "Hera Ma Nono" - he is still a highly sought after session-drummer in Nairobi, as well.
Opening the show is Houston's own DJ SUN, who is only ours by way of Rotterdam (his birthplace) and Suriname. Voted best DJ of the Year from 1999 - 2005, DJ Sun is also the host of KPFT's Soular Grooves show. His eclectic mix lends itself perfectly to the evening. To hear more, please visit soular grooves, mixes are also available for download here. DJ SUN's debut release, Monday Drive EP is available on Alternate Take Records, hopefully available for sale at The Orange Show.
