Concert Preview: Cryptacize at The Mink

2008-06-19_cryptacize.jpgWe missed our chance to properly warn you of Cryptacize's previous show in Houston earlier this year, but we won't do it again. The Oakland-based band plays The Backroom on Thursday, June 19.

From the Asthmatic Kitty label, Cryptacize is the fateful union of indie talents Michael Carreira, Nedelle Torrisi and Chris Cohen. Cohen (formerly of The Curtains and Deerhoof) along with Torrisi (formerly of Nedelle and Thom, not to mention her own solo career), have joined with Carreira to celebrate the delightfully minimalist. Their humble vocals are laid bare, sometimes layered, accompanied with little instrumental fuss, whether it be a simple drumbeats or guitar strumming.

Part of Crypticize's genius lies in that they fully accept that their music is neither too complex or elaborate, both of which are commonly accepted as deal-breakers for industry success these days. The other half of their genius lies in their ability to create humble pop songs that experiment with melody and structure instead of production value.

If that doesn't sound the slightest bit interesting, maybe the local opening acts do. For one, Jenny Westbury and her guitar are sure to charm your collective socks off. Her take on the singer/songwriter gig is most definitely a must-see, if you haven't been able to already.

On the other hand, Black Snakes and Kangaroo? might make your heads implode. From what we know, they don't play all that often (we really only know of one previous appearance), and their sets are unlikely to ever sound the same.
