Many people are unaware that Planned Parenthood offers a variety of free or low-cost services to the local communities in which they operate, including yearly well-woman exams, healthy babies programs, breast cancer screenings, pap smears, cervical cancer treatments, access to all forms of birth control and educational information about men's and women's reproductive health.
In the past year, Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas provided 300 prenatal care exams for low-income Gulfton residents, treated 1,400 cases of cervical cancer and dysplasia, and distributed pamphlets with information on voter registration to 2,500 area residents.
In order to increase awareness of the benefits that Planned Parenthood offers to the Houston community, the Planned Parenthood Young Leaders (or PPYL, for short) have been hosting happy hours and events throughout the summer. PPYL was founded in 1999 as an organization "to build a new generation of supporters and advocates for Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas, and to raise awareness of and appreciation for the agency and the services it provides to the community."
This Thursday night, PPYL (pronounced "people") will be hosting "Cocktails for a Cause" at the Pearl Bar on Washington Avenue, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Sex Panther DJ will be spinning tracks as you enjoy your martinis and cans of Pearl on the back porch.
Thursday's "Cocktails for a Cause" is the official kickoff for the Big Event, a fundraiser which PPYL will be hosting on August 16th. "Party Like a Rockstar" will take place at Warehouse Live and attendees are encouraged to dress like a favorite (or infamous) rockstar of their choice. Last year's event saw nearly half of the KISS Army as well as several Madonnas, Axl Roses, J Lo's and even a Bee Girl (harken back to the Blind Melon days, folks). Tickets to "Party Like a Rockstar" start at $50, with proceeds going to benefit the PPYL and Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas.
