Houston Music for the Weekend of June 26th – 29th, 2008

This, our faithful readers, is what we call a confusing Houston music weekend. After a rather solid run where there was almost too much great music out there, things are looking a little sparse out there. But don’t fret too much – we’re still here to provide everyone with a rundown of where they should be and where we just might be as we enjoy a classic H-Town Summer. Granted, we’re not perfect around here, so let us know in the comments section if there’s any event we’ve missed that you might want to share with us. See ya in the club!

The pickings are rather slim on this evening, so if you’re heading out to hear some music, we’re going to suggest that you locate yourself a favorite venue, order up a few drinks, and simply enjoy the music. We’re personally a bit partial to the energy that seems to emanate from most shows at Walter’s, but we’re not going to make the decision for you. You’re all grownups!

Max Stalling at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

Well then! It seems that Friday brings us a spate of hometown bands to enjoy. Our best barista friend will probably be at Warehouse Live for The Riff Tiffs, our crazy roommate is going to spontaneously combust from seeing all of the great music over at Fitzgerald’s, and our nouveaux kicker little brother just wishes he could get off work to see REK sing his favorite drinking songs over at SHRP. Just do yourselves all a favor and get out there into the mix.

The Riff Tiffs, Lisa's Sons, The Ton Tons, and Fat Tony at Warehouse Live
Skyrocket! And Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
skyblue72 at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Reckless Kelly at Cactus Music
Nothing More, Dawn Over Zero, One Minute Halo, Five Dollar Friend, Built For Speed, and Paris Green at Fitzgerald's
Robert Earl Keen at Sam Houston Race Park

It seems that more musical insanity will ensue on Saturday night. Avant Garden will play host to a benefit show filled with a variety of talented pop acts. But if you’re more inclined to aggressive indie-punk music, then head out to Walter’s for Hollywood Black’s release party for their new Crooked Shepherd EP (the album is free when you pay the door!). However, if you’re more interested in donning some flannel to relive the glory days of ‘90s grunge, then head on up to the ‘burbs to see STP reunited (with Frank Black of the Pixies to open).

Music Makes Change Benefit for Brazos Abiertos: Featuring Young Mammals, The Mathletes, Earnie Banks, The Wild Moccasins, News on the March, The Holly Hall, Piano Vines, and At The Eastern Sea at Avant Garden
Crooked Shepherd CD Release Party: Featuring The Goods, Tambersauro, and Hollywood Black at Walter's on Washington
Stone Temple Pilots/Black Francis at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Get Busy!: featuring DJ Jester the Filipino Fist, Ernest Gonzales, & Bad Knives at The Backroom
