Can we interest you in the brisk salt air and the reassuring view of distant oil platforms in the Gulf with your beer? If so, you'll want to attend the next Saint Arnold pub crawl this Saturday, June 28th starting promptly at 4:00 p.m.
The oft-held and oft-enjoyed pub crawl is getting a new (and an old) twist this weekend. The new twist is that -- for the first time ever! -- it's being held not in Midtown, not in the Village, not at Shepherd Plaza, not even in Houston; it's being held in historic Galveston. The old twist is that, unlike recent Saint Arnold pub crawls, this one will take place in a successive series of venues. To play along, you must hit them in the right order and at the right times or no pint glass for you!
The first location will be at or around 2015 Post Office Street in the Strand district (yes, we realize that "Sea Wall Pub Crawl" is a bit of a misnomer, but we're a slave to the rhyme), beginning at 4:00 p.m. The pub crawl will move on to the next location at 5:00 p.m. and will caravan along like this, every hour on the hour, until the last stop at 7:00 p.m., which should be at 215 22nd Street. For more details on the locations, hit up the Saint Arnold's website.
Come enjoy a pint (or four) and get your commemorative glass while you celebrate the beginning of beach season and honor the Elissa, that grand ship which also shares her name with one of the finest IPAs this side of the Atlantic.
While you're in Galveston, we recommend hitting up some other great spots along the Strand: La King's, for your old-timey soda fountain and candy fix; The Railroad Museum, located in the old railroad terminal at the end of the Strand, where you can tour expertly-preserved (and highly eerie) rail cars at your own leisure; Hendley Market, which has an amazing selection of the coolest and weirdest merchandise outside of Affleck's Palace; and, of course, the Elissa herself.
Off the Strand, you'd be wise to avoid swimming in the water this weekend, especially at Apfel Park or East Beach. Stick to touring some of the island's stately old mansions or strolling along the Sea Wall, and don't say we didn't warn you.
