H-Town Rock

Music for the Weekend of July 10th-13th, 2008

Good afternoon to you all! Welcome back to H-Town Rock, our concerted endeavor here at Houstonist to present a measured accounting of this weekend’s available aural experiences to our dearly beloved fellow denizens of Houston, TX. In other words, this music calendar is our attempt to compel the citizens of H-Town to get out of their living spaces and out into the streets to live it up a bit. Thus, we better see all 13 of our regular readers enjoying some of these events – we know you want to!

In an event that will draw out black-clad gloomies in great numbers, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus will grace our fair streets with his classic gothic dark-pop music. But if you’re more inclined to enjoy a bit more upbeat and dance-inducing music, the Recession Thursdays is probably more your speed (literally and figuratively).

Peter Murphy, Ali Eskandarian, DJ Mina, and DJ Pthalo at The Meridian

Now this should be an exciting night of music in Space City. The Backroom will play host to Papermoons as these talented local mopesters both celebrate the release of their new record and kick off their tour. Bob Schneider returns for another evening of his special brand of folk-rock, while fans of Cory Morrow will be carousing all night long at his concert at SHRP.

Papermoons, Phillip Foshee, B., and The Sour Notes at The Backroom
Bob Schneider, Elizabeth Wills, and Jeremy McComb at Warehouse Live
Bob Log III, Scott Biram, and Possessed By Paul James at Rudyard's

No offense to all of the solid indie rock bands playing across town this evening, but anyone who claims to be a fan of soul, funk, R&B, and/or classic pop music should be present for Earth, Wind & Fire at the Verizon Wireless Theater. It’s just that simple: no explanations or excuses for your absence will be accepted. The donning of your best dancing shoes and your flashiest, most sequin-clad apparel is requested and required for entrance into this event, as bright sights and big smiles will abound.

The McKenzies, Audio in the Pregap, and Ledaswan at The Backroom
Yuppie Pricks and Young Heart Attack at Rudyard's
Earth, Wind & Fire at Verizon Wireless Theater
Randy Travis at Sam Houston Race Park
As Cities Burn and While You Were Gone at Fuel

Now isn’t this fun?!? One night after Earth, Wind & Fire dazzle Houston with their special brand of soul/funk, we’ll be treated to a different (and probably dirtier) sort of musical anachronism when Faster Pussycat and L.A. Guns crash into The Meridian for a show. Granted, if you’re anything like Houstonist, this is the night you’ll find us at a slightly smaller dive supporting a quality Houston-bred band or three (**cough** Young Mammals **cough**).

Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Bang Tango, High Four, Mercury Down at The Meridian
Alkari, Ellypsea, Via Linda, The Gold Sounds, Thea at Warehouse Live
Hard Place and Young Mammals at The Mink
Soulbound at Fitzgerald's
Wine & Alchemy at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
