Calvin Murphy Sk8's with Houston Roller Derby

07112008_HRD.jpgHot Bout in the City this Sunday, July 13th at the Verizon Wireless, come on out and see Houston's HaRD Knocks take on Austin's Texas Rollergirls Texicutioners (ranked #4 in the nation). Bout two is Stars v. Stripes featuring your favorite HRD skaters. The season is moving by faster than a jammer who's just picked herself up off the floor (have you seen how fast those ladies move? - we would pull a hammie to get out of the way, they are typically rather peeved too.), there are two more bouts after this one and the championship. Then, the only full contact sports left are football and hockey. This month, proceeds benefit Texas Equusearch - whose services we wish people never had to use, it would mean no inexplicably missing people. Halftime entertainment courtesy of Gulf Coast Sound and the afterparty is at Mezzanine.

As we've stated before, be careful on the first row - flying roller girls are not uncommon. In conjunction with that, please don't endanger those precious little roller derby enthusiasts by allowing them on the first couple of rows, unless they are over twelve. If you are over twelve, well, really over twenty-one and in the first few rows and a roller girl is flying straight for you, completely airborne and out of control (no, don't take a photo) save that beer or soda, or plain water - a wet floor delays the game and is very, very dangerous to the athletes. Unlike many other professional sports, these ladies are in it for the love, cause it's sure not the money. They don't get paid for playing and have to purchase all of their own gear and insurance - so, you should take every single opportunity to show them some love, financially speaking, of course.

As we noted in our headline, NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy will be on hand at Sunday's bout, and, we understand that he will be skating. Doors at 4:00 p.m. and the action formally starts at 5:00 p.m., so, get on out there and make sure you have a beer and a seat before the action starts!!! If you get in early, you have more time to peruse the souveniers, you know you need a t-shirt and maybe a sticker or several, of each. Think Christmas gifts, stocking stuffers, cool gear to wear to the next kegger!!!
