H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of July 17th – 20th

Hello there Houston. We’re glad that you’ve returned to us here at the H-Town Rock portion of Houstonist and we know that you’re glad that we’re back for yet another week. This is a lovely symbiotic relationship we have: we write about the upcoming music happenings in our fair city and you read what we write, taking in the information we provide and making plans for an exciting night (or nights!) out on the town. Hopefully, you’ll eventually grow confident enough to actually comment on what we write, because until then, we’re not quite sure that you really love us. But never fear – whether or not we’re convinced of your affection, we’re going to continue to give you a rundown of what we consider to be the premier music-related events in the Bayou City. So, read along with us and please let us know what you think (or if we’ve missed anything you might consider crucial. Enjoy!

It seems that many of our friends will be crisscrossing the city looking to satisfy their musical appetites. Our nouveaux-kicker little brother will flex his punk-ish street cred by making an appearance at the Less Than Jake show. Our favorite barista will amble over to Numbers for some Riff Tiffs after he gets off his shift, while some of our folkie friends will giggle with glee at Bob Schneider over at The Duck. Music abounds tonight, so get out into it!

Less Than Jake, Big D and the Kids Table, and Suburban Legends at The Meridian
Recession Thursdays: Featuring Riff Tiffs, Lisa's Sons, Pale, The Takes, Come See My Dead Person, & Ceeplus Bad Knives at Numbers
Empty Orchestra, Religious Girls, and Hear You Me at Walter's on Washington
Less Than Jake (In-Store Appearance) at Cactus Music
Super Pancho Combo, Stamen, and Tyburn Jig at Rudyard's
Bob Schneider at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

We here at H-Town Rock always love a good Tilly show, mostly because we have a soft spot in our hearts from some tap-dancing, freaky folk rock. And since we managed to catch one of their sets at SXSW back in March, we’re wholeheartedly fans of the band’s new material. Elsewhere around town, Fitz’s plays host to some familiar post-punk and hardcore acts and The Mink holds one of its semi-regular, nearly all-night-long DJ sets. So, why don’t you step away from the computer screen and enjoy yourselves? We’ll all be the better for it.

Tilly and The Wall/Elaine Greer/The Wild Moccasins at The Engine Room
The Finalist, Eldridge, The Last Place You Look, Sidewise, The Last Starfighter, and Good Night Goddess at Fitzgerald's
Austin Lounge Lizards at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Nacotheque, Sesentatigres, Clash, Ceeplus Bad Knives, Juan the Terrible, and Latintron DJs at The Mink
Christopher Denny and the Old Soles (In-Store Appearance) at Cactus Music
Roger Creager at Sam Houston Race Park

Indie & punk rockers have a nice, full night ahead of them. Starting off, they can work on their manners a bit by attending the Hollywood Black in-store appearance at Cactus Music (6pm start time!), but they can then shake off their attempts at proper decorum later that night when they arrive at Rudyard’s to partake of four excellent bands. Go! Now! Eat, drink, and be merry! Or disdainfully scowl. Whatever. Just do something.

The Ends, Something Fierce, Alarma, and Sister Devastation at Rudyard's
Hollywood Black (In-Store Appearance) at Cactus Music
Ian Moore, Doug Burr, and Christopher Denny at The Continental Club

Sunday, July 20th

Rx Bandits, Facing New York, Portugal The Man, and Kam at The Meridian
Paper Route, Brooke Waggoner, The Gold Sounds, and Paris Falls at The Mink
Joshua Radin, Vanessa Carlton, Alexa Wilkinson at Warehouse Live
