Underground Sounds

Wherever you may be headed tonight, make sure to at least do a fly-by at the Contemporary Arts Museum so you don't kick yourself later for missing Steel Lounge Underground.

072508_cam.jpgHeld on the last Friday of every month, Steel Lounge Underground is a mad tonic of music and art featuring local DJs and musicians performing alongside the latest exhibit in the Contemporary Arts Museum's Zilkha Gallery.

This month features Houston-based DJs Jessica Lozano and Cee Plus Bad Knives, with a special live performance by the soulful Caretta Bell. Jessica Lozano spins from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Cee Plus Bad Knives takes over from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with Caretta Bell providing the delicious, creamy center of that musical layer cake from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

While the music is spinning, you can check out the current art exhibit, Snow, an installation created by Los Angeles artist Allie Bogle and Houston photographer Libbie Masterson. According to the Contemporary Arts Museum's website, Snow features "immersive environments in which viewers are invited to either engage in playful interaction or quiet meditation. In their respective works, each artist speaks to landscape, but with a particular articulation that questions the viewer's perception of what is natural and what is man-made."

Of course, no evening of music and art would be complete without a few cocktails, which will also be on hand throughout the night. And like every good CAM event and exhibit, Steel Lounge Underground is free (donations to the museum are always appreciated, however). Walk, bike or ride the Light Rail over to the museum and you can make it an incredibly cheap yet fun and culture-filled night. And you say that Houstonist never did anything for you...
