Houston Press Music Awards Showcase

The Houston Press has once again announced their 2008 nominees for the highly-anticipated Houston Press Music Awards. It's not too late to vote for your favorite band, performer, album, underground rapper, drummer, zydeco outfit, tribute band or any number of exciting music geek categories. Just remember that voting ends tomorrow, July 27th.

Of course, if you've already voted and want to take in a Sunday afternoon that's fit to bursting with local musical talent, then you won't want to miss tomorrow's Houston Press Music Awards Showcase, featuring many of the nominees in several venues throughout downtown and throughout the day. 60 bands and five DJs from across the Bayou City will all descend upon downtown tomorrow, including Houstonist favorites The Tontons, Black Math Experiment, Molly & the Ringwalds, Flying Fish Sailors and Los Skarnales. Each of the 60 bands have strong local followings and creative, energetic performing styles, so hitting up several in a row should be an exhilarating experience to say the least.

Across our bustling and long-since revitalized downtown, 11 different venues will be playing host to the legion of bands and DJs. Dean's Credit Clothing, Notsuoh, Flying Saucer, The Real Sammies, Hard Rock, Butterfly High, ROCBAR, Venue, Havana and Live Sports Bar are the spots to hit, with performances starting at 4:00 p.m. and running every hour until the final performances at 9:00 p.m. The exception is the "after-hours party" at Mosaic, where the award-nominated DJs will begin spinning at 10:00 p.m. and will continue well into the wee hours of the night. Tickets can be purchased online or at Bayou Place, the official entrance spot for the Showcase. They're a total steal, too: 60 bands for only $10. The only caveat? It's 21 and up, so leave your little brother at home with his Wii while you and your friends paint the town red (and green and gold and pink and polka-dotted). It's going to be a hell of a night for live, local music and one that you shouldn't miss under any circumstances.
