Stand By Do-Me
When the night has come / And the land is dark / And the moon is the only / Light you see / No, I won't be afraid / No, I won't shed a tear / Just as long as you come / To Domy
Domy Books, the bookstore you've been searching for your entire life (whether you knew it or not), is screening that classic coming-of-age film that made us all frightened of train tracks and Kiefer Sutherland: Stand By Me. Part of their Monday Movie Night series, the film will begin at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow night, July 28th.
Starring Wil Wheaton (before he was the immortal Wesley Crusher), Jerry O'Connell (before he was hot), Corey Feldman (before he was a washed-up reality star), Kiefer Sutherland (before made a mockery of himself on 24) and River Phoenix (before he was dead, obviously), this time-honored film, which is based upon a Stephen King novella from the same collection that gave us Apt Pupil and The Shawshank Redemption, explores the poignant and often-confusing world of burgeoning adolescence, independence, friendship and loss. A classic in every sense of the world, Stand By Me is one of those seminal films that everyone should see at least twice, or as many times as it takes you to memorize the words to "Lollipop."
If you want to make it three times (or if you've never seen it and are just now realizing what you've been missing out on your entire life, aside from Domy Books), head out to Lower Westheimer on Monday night with a friend or two to catch a free screening at Domy. Houstonist recommends browsing the shelves of Domy beforehand to check out their expert selection of books, magazines, graphic novels and various other amusing items.
