For the Weekend of August 21st-24th, 2008
In lieu of our traditional introduction, H-Town Rock would like to take this time to wish a Happy 30th Birthday to Rudyard’s. The esteemed Montrose British pub is holding a three-day rolling celebration for itself this weekend, complete with performances from some of the top acts in our fair city. If you’ve ever enjoyed a few pints (or several dozen in Houstonist’s case) at Rudz, please make sure your way over to 2010 Waugh and pay some homage.
Thursday, August 21st
Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but Houstonist would like to remind you of the sheer musical genius that will be on display at The Orange Show on Thursday. Fans of left-of-center electro-punk-psych-freak wankery will surely pack this venue out, whether they’re present for Mr. Stewart’s brand of blissful weirdness or Ms. Bozulich’s. Nothing against the other ongoing gigs around town tonight, but I’m sure most of them would love to be here as well.
The Melvins and Big Business at Warehouse Live
Recession Thursdays: Featuring Alkari, Generation Landslide, Something Fierce, and Television Skies at Numbers
V Fathom, Requiem, Ethreal, Face Meets Pavement, and A Bitter Winter at Walter's on Washington
Xiu Xiu, Carla Bozulich, Common Eider, and King Ider at The Orange Show
Friday, August 22nd
Suffice to say, per our introduction, there’s good chance that Houstonist will be at Rudz tonight to knock back a few ales and to enjoy some quality local rock music. Granted, if we’re feeling up to it later in the evening, we might wander over to The Mink for some Ceeplus, as he always puts on a great set. Besides, it's Friday night - we should all be out and about doing something interesting!
DJ Jester the Filipino Fist, Dayta, and Ceeplus Bad Knives at The Mink
Donna To Dusk (Smashing Pumpkins tribute) at Last Concert Cafe
Eye Against Final Show: Featuring The Jonbenet, The Last Place You Look, Supremacy, Grave Robbers, Indisgust, and Euphilia at Fitzgerald's
Randy Rogers Band at Sam Houston Race Park
Reggie and the Full Effect, MC Chris, Leathermouth, and Warship at Warehouse Live
Rudyard's 30th Anniversary Party: Featuring Bring Back The Guns, Spain Colored Orange, and Three Fantastic at Rudyard's
Saturday, August 23rd
If Houstonist were any kind of stand-up comic, we’d be able to write up a few weeks of material based solely upon the musical fare in town this Saturday night. Let’s examine what we have here. Cliché pop country in the suburbs? Check. Ancient metal in another set of ‘burbs? Weird location, but check. Local bands plying their wares at a variety of stylistically appropriate venues, thus merely reinforcing Houston’s fractured scene? Got ‘em by the droves. Bizarre, over-the-top, ‘90s rock tribute show? Um… Yeah. Got that one as well. Yet, instead of attempting to make sad, desperate Miley Cyrus and achy-breaky jokes, we’re simply going to suggest to our dozen or so readers that they simply find a place where they can enjoy themselves. That’s what we’re going to do.
Billy Ray Cyrus at Sam Houston Race Park
Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell, Mötörhead, and Testament at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Rad Rich's Birthday Bash: Featuring American Sharks, Full Contact, Luxurious Panthers, Machete, Smugglaz, Streetwise, The Takes, UYUS, and more at Notsuoh
The Rafters and The Hightailers at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar
Ronnie Milsap at Stafford Centre
Rudyard's 30th Anniversary Party: Featuring Linus Pauling Quartet, Poor Dumb Bastards, and Something Fierce at Rudyard's
Texas Johnny Boy and Milton Hopkins at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Underground Soul Summit: Featuring Anthony David, Conya Doss, Eric Roberson, Gordon Chambers, Leela James, Punkin from Pluto, Se7en, and Sy Smith at Arena Theatre
You Ain't Grunge: Featuring Brown vs. Board (as Rage Against The Machine), Cellcyst (as Korn), Darwin's God (as Soundgarden), Deus Machina (as Nine Inch Nails), Dine Alone (as Deftones), Full Release (as The Toadies), Meaningless Conflict (as Helmet), Numero Unos (as Screeching Weasel), Smoke Eaters (as Foo Fighters), and Sun Machine (as Stone Temple Pilots) at Fitzgerald's
Sunday, August 24th
We’ve got nothing. Seriously. What do you expect us to do: actually partake of an American Idol concert or depressingly over-played radio rock show? We think not. Sadly, we’d rather have attended the ‘90s rock tribute show last night than make a trek to The Woodlands to see Cornell and Linkin Park perform their version of rock music. To the bars we go!
American Idols Live at Toyota Center
The Delta Flyers at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Projekt Revolution: Featuring Armor For Sleep, Ashes Divide, Atreyu, The Bravery, Chris Cornell, Hawthorne Heights, and Linkin Park at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Matt Pryor, Kevin Devine, and Arthur Yoria at Warehouse Live
Rudyard's 30th Anniversary Party: Featuring The Dolly Rockers, Luxurata, and The Trian Woodburns at Rudyard's

Missed Connections: November 2 - 5
