Interview: Talking Football with UH's Rodney Hannah

After an outstanding stint at Yuba Community College where he was named a top-100 junior college basketball player in California; Rodney Hannah came to the University of Houston and contributed to the team during the 2004-05 season.

But Hannah realized he missed football so he traded in dunks for touchdowns as he was part of the 2006 UH C-USA Championship football team. After the season, Hannah was told NFL scouts were interested in his raw talent, but he went undrafted. After trying out for several teams, the Dallas Cowboys signed Hannah to a free agent contract and he spent the '07 season on the Cowboys practice squad. With one-year under his belt learning the ropes, Hannah has a chance of making the roster as the team's third tight end.

Houstonist had the opportunity to talk to Hannah at the Dallas Cowboys 2008 Kick-Off Luncheon in Addison, TX on Friday.

Rodney, what's it been like being a member of the Dallas Cowboys?

It's been a great experience to get to learn the game and especially being with a great organization like this and getting to learn from one of the best tight ends in the game, Jason Witten.

Against the Denver Broncos last week, you lead the team with four catches for 52 yards. How are you feeling so far in training camp as the season approaches?

I feel good. I've definitely learned a lot from last season and the coach's have taken the time to sit down with me and teach me the fundamentals; something I missed out on throughout my college career since I only played (football) in my senior season.

Has there been any player that has taken you under their wing or given you any advice to help you out?

Yeah, I definitely have to say Jason Witten and Tony Curtis. They have really helped me out. They see the little things that I'm lacking and they help me build on them to improve.

Tonight, your Cowboys are playing the Texans. What do you think about these two teams playing every year in the regular season?

Yeah, rivalries are always good; especially since both teams are in the same state. It's always healthy competition when these two teams meet.

Rodney, do you have any family coming out to watch you today?

Actually my dad just flew in. He'll be down for the weekend and he'll be at the game.

The Houston Cougars have a new football coach in Kevin Sumlin. Do you still follow the team? And if so, what are your thoughts on the upcoming season?

I keep up with all the players at U of H and I've talked to them and they said they really believe in the coach (Sumlin) and that he knows what he's talking about it and that he's a real intelligent and educated guy. I predict a good outcome for the Cougars this year.
