The 2008-2009 DiverseWorks season opens on September 19 with Understanding Poverty, a multimedia exhibition by Houston-based photojournalist Ben Tecumseh DeSoto. The exhibition will feature DeSoto's 20-year investigation into Houston's homeless and working poor, with field reporting contributed by Ann Walton Sieber and a special light installation by Sarah Whatley Ayers.
DeSoto began documenting life on the streets in Houston after meeting two homeless Houstonians, Ben White and Judy Pruitt. Over the past two decades he has followed the pair, chronicling their lives as they struggle to overcome hardship. The result is a moving portrayal of citizens living on the streets and "in the shadows in America's cities".
More than an art exhibition, The Understanding Poverty Project is an ongoing collaboration between the artist and several organizations (including DiverseWorks, The Houston Endowment, and Que Imaging and others) with the mission to promote awareness of the underlying causes of homelessness and develop solutions.
Understanding Poverty runs September 19 through November 1.
