For the Weekend of September 25th-28th, 2008
Welcome back everyone! Before we get into this week’s rundown of upcoming musical opportunities around our Ike-ravaged city, H-Town Rock would like to apologize for our absence last week and we hope that our fellow Houston residents are healthy and well as the city collectively recuperates and returns to full power. There are a lot of great shows around town this weekend, especially on Friday, as several acts playing Austin City Limits Fest on Saturday are dropping by Houston first. After dealing with the after-effects of the Ike for the past two weeks, we all deserve a bit of a break. Get out there and have fun!
Thursday, September 25th

Well, well, well – if this isn’t an evening of diverse music opportunities around Space City. From country, folk, and blues to rock, Celtic punk, and indie, there’s something for just about everyone on this night. Take your pick folks! Just don’t complain about having nothing to do.

Dan's Original Blues Jam: Featuring Teri Greene Band and Don Thomas at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

Friday, September 26th

Whether you’ve been working for the weekend or just waiting around for the power to come back on in your house, tonight presents an excellent chance to explore Houston and find some great music around town. Our personal recommendation here at H-Town Rock would be for everyone to head out to The Meridian to experience the songwriting majesty of Jason Pierce and his band Spiritualized as they perform songs from their most recent album, Songs In A&E (one of our Top Ten Records of 2008 so far). Otherwise, you’re going to run into our crazy roommate as he splits time between Fitz’s and Rudyards or one of our neo-hippie barista friends as they wail away the night with the Sideshow Tramps at Dan Electro’s.
Ben Kweller and Whitley at Walter's on Washington
boy., listenlisten, and Lenny Briscoe at The House of Booze
Dine Alone, Project H, and The Crises at Fitzgerald's
Fired For Walking (EP Release Show), Bright Men of Learning, Novox, and Mr. Castillo at Rudyard's
The Fratellis, Electric Touch, and The Airborne Toxic Event at Warehouse Live
Jimmy LaFave at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Kristine Mills (In-Store Performance) at Cactus Music
Sideshow Tramps and News on the March at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar
Spiritualized and Grand Ole Party at The Meridian
Saturday, September 27th

We’re going to make this easy for you – if you’re even the slightest fan of neo-jazz, soul, funk, and/or groove-oriented music, you should be present for the massive show at Avant Garden on Saturday. Nothing against The Wiggins, Hearts of Animals (she’s usually a never-miss show for us), and the rest of the bands playing Houston tonight, but we’d feel quite foolish if we didn’t take advantage of the chance to see Joe B., Suma, and Kool B all spinning records in the same locale.
Ben Sollee at Dosey Doe
Carolyn Wonderland/The Hightailers @ Dan Electro's Guitar Bar
Girl In a Coma/Pin-Up Pilot/Seared/Tribella @ Fitzdown
Joe B., Suma, Illset, Swift, BMC, Karina, and Kool B at Avant Garden
Joe's Roadhouse: Featuring Alan Haynes and Jud Johnson Band at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar
Lo-Fi No-Brow Folk Show: Featuring The Wiggins, Hearts of Animals, and Benjamin Wesley at ArtStorm
Sunday, September 28th
The Calm Blue at Notsuoh
Houston Women's Festival Kickoff Party: Featuring Ellis at Rudyard's
Kristine Mills at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

Missed Connections: Gefilte Fish...and "Chain Connections"

The flogging MOlly concert has been postponed until like... February or something. They blamed that on Ike, but it seems like the city has pretty much already recovered, so that's kinda weird.
CALM BLUE ON SUNDAY IS GONNA BE MEGA-LEGIT. I cant WAIT to see them!
For those that dont know...its instrumental post rock in the vein of Explosions in the Sky and The Album Leaf. PLUS they are Texans
