For the Weekend of October 2nd-5th, 2008
Hello there Houston. It’s good to see all of you this afternoon, as together we look over our fair city and discern just where it is we need to be in order to absorb some quality tunes this weekend. The quest for the best and brightest artists in town is an important one, fraught with dangers that include $30K millionaires and their silicon-addicted acolytes, pretentious hipsters and their lame attempts to appear proletarian, and generally crappy music performed by bands with limited musical acumen. Thus, once we are made aware of the peril and are able to discern where not to go in order to avoid the hazards to an enjoyable evening, it’s now time to get out there and enjoy the show!
Thursday, October 2nd

This looks to be quite wide-open evening, as we have alterna-emo bands at Warehouse, comfortable folk music at The Duck, punky rockabilly over at Walter’s, and indie rock and hip-hop at The Mink. Then again, it also appears to be musical business as normal around the venues of Houston.
Anberlin, Straylight Run, and There For Tomorrow at Warehouse Live
Connie Mims at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Throwrag, Roger Miret & The Disasters, Static Thought, Viva Hate, and Hell City Kings at Walter's on Washington
Yip Yip, Pataphysics, B L A C K I E, and TENSE at The Mink
Friday, October 3rd

No offense to Mr. Rollins (mostly because we’re afraid he’ll track us down and break our leg for addressing him inappropriately), but couldn’t you have found someplace else actually IN Houston for you to perform your spoken-word magic? You’re in Stafford, for deity’s sake. Was your booking agent not able to acquire a decently sized stage inside the loop? We’re sure that you would have been able to fill most any small to mid-sized location in town, but instead you’re playing out on the southwest side in the middle of the suburbs. It just seems to be counter-intuitive to us. Oh well – we’ll defer to your better judgment, since we’re not the ones who fronted Black Flag back in the day. Enjoy looking at all of the McMansions out there!
Becoming the Archetype, A Different Breed of Killer, At Calvary, Legion Acora, I Saw An Angel, and The Red Waltz at Javajazz Coffee House
Carolyn Wonderland at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
The Four Deadly Elements, Broken Poetz, Grinch Rodregues, Snipe, and The Plague at Fitzgerald's
Henry Rollins (Spoken-Word Performance) at Stafford Centre
Jaguares at Warehouse Live
The Kooks and The Whigs at The Meridian
Lao Tzu, Cain Was Able, Carry the Storm, and Bloodvoid at Fitzdown
Quintron and Miss Pussycat and Golden Triangle at Walter's on Washington
Switchfoot, Third Day, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and Jars of Clay at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Saturday, October 4th

Well, isn’t this a curious set of options for the evening? Obviously, our crazy roommate will be all over Fitzgerald’s on this night: rowdy, bawdy hard rock upstairs with metal/hardcore bands playing downstairs. For those of you who’d care to enjoy a drink or four with us this Saturday, we’ll be at Rudyard’s listening to local boys Spain Colored Orange open up for quirky string-quartet-meets-indie-pop act Ra Ra Riot. But whatever you do eventually select for your evening’s entertainment, just make sure you do so responsibly. We do want to see each of you return for next week’s edition of H-Town Rock.
2nd Annual Rock for Houston's Youth Concert: Featuring D.R.U.M., Studemont Project, Rowe, The Crisis, Electric Attitude, Advent Scars, Westborn, City of Sounds, Fulton Read, Sevi, and The Blue Poptarts at Warehouse Live
Boogie Bandits: Featuring Dayta, Prince Klassen, and Orion at Boondocks
LoneStar PornStar (CD Release Show), Chrome 44, Energy Williams, and Almost Sober at Fitzgerald's
Otenki (Tour Kickoff Show), Inapt, The Last Place You Look, Thea, and The Last Starfighter at Fitzdown
Ra Ra Riot, Walter Meego, The Morning Benders, and Spain Colored Orange at Rudyard's
The Swan Kings, Ryan From the Shire, and Jorge Dahnke at Dosey Doe
Sunday, October 5th
Fear Before the March of Flames, I Am The Ocean, Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, and Charlameigne at Walter's on Washington
News on the March (EP Release Show), The Wild Moccasins, Elaine Greer, and Earnie Banks at The Mink

Henry Rollins usually performs at the Meridian. My guess is that he needed more space this time around. Still-- hello, try the warehouse or something.
Which is exactly my point -- if Mr. Rollins needed more space for his set, there are appropriately sized venues in this town that would quickly fill up because of his mere presence.
