For the Weekend of October 16th – 19th, 2008
Hello there Houston. We here at H-Town Rock hope that all eleven (twelve?) of our readers are having a great week so far, mostly because no one likes a crappy week. Truth be told, in terms of actual music, there’s a solid slate of acts rolling through town this week, ranging from the insanely hip and trendy to bands that were hip and trendy twenty years ago (but still manage to fill up large arenas). All kidding aside, Houston has a fair share of top-notch music stop by recently, so again, you have no excuse to not enjoy yourselves all weekend long. Let’s get into it!
Thursday, October 16th

Ok. Seriously now. What genius set it up where both Jay-Z and NKOTB would be performing in Space City on the SAME night? Hilarious. While we could make fun of New Kids On The Block in this entire space, we realize that those tacky jokes just write themselves (and that our crazy '80s loving friend will hunt us down), so instead we’ll openly wonder why Jay-Z is playing the (new-to-Houston) House of Blues. Was there not another decent-sized venue (much less one more hip-hop oriented) that he could have played? Whatever. Who are we to question the decisions of Mr. Carter? Does this make his return retirement official? We just hope this doesn't turn into another "Will he or won't he?" Favre-esque scenario.
CAVE, Balaclavas, and The Wiggins at The Mink

The Suspects at Discovery Green
Friday, October 17th
We’re going to make this simple for you. As infectious as the sounds of Reverend Horton Heat and Asleep At The Wheel might be, it won’t be able to compare with the music being performed at The Mink. All manner of punk, rock, folk, and prog will be on display by four of Houston’s finest groups and it’s all to celebrate Tambersauro releasing their new album, Theories of Delusional Origin. Do the guys a favor and show them some support.
The Backsliders and Electric Attitude at Rudyard's
Opeth, High on Fire, and Baroness (with Burn the Boats for the after show) at Warehouse Live
Reverend Horton Heat, Asleep At The Wheel, and Whiskey River Revival at House of Blues

Tambersauro Record Release Show: Featuring listenlisten, Eat Grapes, and Hollywood Black at The Mink
Saturday, October 18th

We’re going to flip the script a bit here. As opposed to encouraging you to support your local bands, we’re going to suggest you make it out to Warehouse to witness the insane musical spectacle that is Greg Gillis and Girl Talk. While Bring Back The Guns always puts on a fantastic set, filled with their special brand of quirky, almost-mathy, Fugazi-inspired rock, there’s something to be said for a show where nearly every popular single and sample from the past ten years will be artfully cobbled together to comprise a ninety-minute show. Just make sure you get there early, as this will be an RSVP, first-come-first-served show.
