It's time for Dia de los Muertos, well officially it is celebrated November 1st and 2nd, but, the exhibits and events are kickin' already at the Lawndale Art Center. The Retablo Exhibition opened yesterday and runs through November 8th. This is the 21st annual exhibition showcasing various interpretations of traditional retablo painting by Texas artists. Also commencing yesterday and running concurrent with the exhibit is the Community Ofrenda. Guests are encouraged to bring a personal remembrance of a deceased loved one to their community alter.
The Gala and Silent Auction will be held Thursday, October 23rd beginning with a Sponsor/Member preview from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the Gala and Silent Auction from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. the Silent Auction will close at 8:45 p.m. Music from Mr. Bristle and friends. Various delectables will be served beverages sponsored by Patron Tequila and Saint Arnold Brewery. Gala Chair, Nicole C. Laurent. Tickets are $40 per person or $30 per person for Members. Tuesday, October 28th the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, Houston Chamber Choir and Musiqa will present musical ofrendas ranging from short original contemporary to classic compositions written as remembrances in the tradition of making an offering during Dia de los Muertos celebrations. A Sugar Skull Workshop will be held Thursday, October 30th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. each participant can take home one skull of their own and the recipe - the rest are for Family Day Fiesta. The Lawndale Art Center will also be hosting a Family Day Fiesta on Saturday, November 1st from Noon until 4:00 p.m.. This celebration will honor Houston area teachers and students and an exhibit of their works will be shown in the Cavnar and Mezzanine Galleries. Performances will be held by Mixteco Ballet Folklorico and baritone Octavio Moreno from the Houston Grand Opera Studio. Guests can cut papel picado and decorate sugar skulls. Hot chocolate and pan de muerto will be available.
