The CYNICS have been around for 25 years now, born in 1983 at a small recording label is Pittsburg during the height of garage rock's second wave. Singer and mastermind Gregg Kostelich (who also owns Get Hip Records) has kept the band together through personnel changes, the coming and going of grunge music and whatever else a quarter-century of touring might throw at a band.
During that time, the CYNICS have played numerous festivals in Europe, recorded some 20 singles, released two live albums and are finally finding their niche again with the third garage revival, recording their first CD in many years at Austin's Sweatbox Studios in 2002.
Last yea they released another album, "Here We Are," and at 12 songs in 40 minutes, it's clear these guys aren't here to waste your time. The album exhibits the band's wide range of influence, with sounds oscillating from Zombies-inspired to The Byrds to The Hives to even the Lemonheads.
But what reviewers have noted most about the CYNICS is the voracity of their live shows. This is a band who has survived on touring, and if you need a taste of what tonight's show might be like, you need only to visit the magic of YouTube to find out.
Joining the CYNICS at Rudz tonight are Austin garage-rockers The Ugly Beats. Houstonist hung out with the Beats earlier this year when they opened for The Fleshtones, and at that show the members of the band where everywhere but the small stage at Rudyards. During one song there was even a push-up contest in the crowd, which was won by Ugly Beat's drummer Stephen Austin.
Houston's own Guitars will open the show.
