H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of November 20th – 23rd, 2008

Before we get into the actual music for the week, we here at H-Town Rock would like to thank the eleven (twelve?) regular readers of Houstonist for giving so much comment-love to last week’s edition of H-Town Rock (much less our ruminations on Fun Fun Fun Fest). It’s nice to know that people actually read our words and find them engaging enough to actually talk back to us. That being said, we currently are not able to fulfill one lovely commenter’s request for the inclusion of show times for Monday – Wednesday; however, we are making plans to begin doing such in January 2009. Patience, dear readers, is a virtue. And now – onto the music!

We could go a great many directions in breaking down the shows in town on this night, but we’re going to start by giving credit where credit is due. Regardless of what you might think about the music of Augustana, it’s always great to see local artists find there way onto bills with national touring acts. With any luck, those folks who get out to Walter’s for the evening will be introduced to and will fall in love with the music of Tody Castillo and Antarctica Starts Here. In other news, though The Black Crowes show is sold out, it will be interesting to learn if Chris Robinson has learned how to play southern rock music again after spending so much time in Hollywood as the celebrity husband of Kate Hudson. Oh, by the way: Metallica? Who’s that?

Augustana, Tody Castillo, Antarctica Starts Here at Walter's on Washington
The Black Crowes/Buffalo Killers at House of Blues
Camaro: Featuring Mad Happy, Tha Fucking Transmissions, Mr. Castillo, and DJ Shanley at Boondocks
Metallica, The Sword, and Down at Toyota Center
Year Long Disaster, Violence of the Sun, and Bayou Monster at Rudyard's

This is an easy choice. If you see one show this evening, make your way out to Warehouse Live to see one of hip-hop’s more classic MC’s perform tracks from his new album, while one of hip-hop’s brightest up-and-comers opens for him. That’s right folk: Q-Tip, leader of the seminal hip-hop collective A Tribe Called Quest, is in town touring the highly lauded The Renaissance with rambunctious The Cool Kids as the opening act. No offense is intended towards the iconic personages of B.B. King or George Jones, but your blues and country (respective) will prove to be no match for Q-Tips beats and wordplay on this November Friday night here in Space City.

B.B. King and Shawn Pittman Band at House of Blues
The Caprolites, The Delta Block, The Hangouts, and 500 Megatons of Boogie at Notsuoh
Don't Fight It: Featuring Dave Wrangler, Piss Heavy, and Young Squaddy at Boondocks
George Jones at Arena Theatre
Latch Key Kids at Walter's on Washington
Otenki, American Fangs, Meriwether, and Great American Actors at Fitzgerald's
Otep, Ill Nino, and Walls of Jericho at The Scout Bar
Q-Tip, The Cool Kids, and The Knux at Warehouse Live
Rhythmatic: Featuring DJ SDF-One at The Mink
The Suspects and The Neptones at The Continental Club
Wolves at the Door, Ozeal, Studemont Project, Yoko Mono, and Juzcoz at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar

As per his usual, our crazy roommate is going to be tossing back brews at Fitz’s, while taking in the jam band stylings of Spoonfed Tribe and D.R.U.M. On the flipside, our well-connected activist urbanite friend will be his daylight hours enjoying Via Colori over at Sam Houston Park, located at Allen Parkway and Bagby, while our nouveaux kicker brother will be enjoying the raucous folk-rock of The Gougers. Where will we be? We’ll probably start the day at Cactus for Mechanical Boy and Ruby James before joining our brother at The Duck. That is, unless you can convince us otherwise…
